Wings sweep marathon doubleheader.... Post Date June 14th, 2007

... The Wings swept a marathon doubleheader last evening at McDonough against the Hornell Dodgers, the games were scheduled for 7 innings each starting at 5PM but in the end they went 10 and 11 innings respectively. After 6 hours of baseball, the Wings walked away with two wins... at 11:38PM!

Game 1... The Wings looked to be in trouble early as the Dodgers plated four runs in the top of the first, but the '07 Wings are anything but quitters as they have shown many times early in this season. The Wings bounced back quickly and proceeded to load the bases in the second after two outs had been recorded. Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) came up in a position to do some damage. He hit a towering fly ball to the 380 sign in left center field, but came up about 2 feet shy of a grand slam. The ball smashed off the wall, and the resulting double cleared the bases. The Wings were back in it. The Wings took the lead in the third when Brendan Stokes (Northeastern) doubled in two runs, and then Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) followed with a double of his own to drive in Stokes. The Dodgers would not go quietly, they knotted the score in the top of the sixth, and the game would remain tied until the bottom of the 10th. In the tenth Ryan Hypke (Francis Marion) found himself on second with one out, Brock Miller hit a fly ball to right, Hypke tagged at second and advanced to third, the resulting throw got past the third baseman, and Hypke was able to score the winning run on the error.

Game 2... After a dramatic win in the first game the Wings wanted to start fast in the second, and they did! The Wings were able to score twice in the first inning, and then the game turned into a pitcher's duel. The Dodgers tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth, it became increasingly obvious this one would also not go the scheduled seven! The Dodgers pitchers mowed down the Wings after the first inning, striking out a total of 18, the Wings tandem of Jeremy Kehrt (Southern Indiana) and Lance Rhodes (SE Missouri St) combined for 9 K's of their own while scattering 6 hits. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 11th. In the eleventh Chad Daledien (University of Texas @ Tyler) was able to work a one out walk, then steal second base. Brett Burch (Oral Roberts) proceeded to follow up the swiped base with a screamer toward third, a ball the third baseman could not handle. Daledien was able to then plate the winning run on the error.

...The Wings travel to Brockport today for a 5PM start against the RiverBats. The Wings will return home to face Niagara Falls at 7:30 on Friday, and Brockport at 7:30 on Saturday. Remember, free youth clinics are Saturday from 10-noon and Sunday Noon-2.
