Wings blank Allegany for second shutout in a row (updated)... Post date July 22nd, 2007

... The Wings blanked league leading Allegeny County last night, and knocked them out of first place with the loss. Three Wings pitchers combined for a three hit shutout of the Nitros. Paul Berticcini (LSU) pitched five strong innings. Allowing 2 hits while striking out 6. Ashton Mowdy (E Oklahoma) finished up for Bertuccini striking out 3 in three innings and not allowing a hit. In the final frame Kyle Bellamy (Miami) allowed his first walk of the season, but struck out two to earn his 12th save and break the Red Wing single season save record. The Wings pitchers have now held the opposition scoreless for the past 19 2/3 innings! To help the pitching out, the Wings scored early. In the top of the first Chris Vargo (Richmond) reached as the first batter, being hit by a pitch. Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) followed with a single. Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) then singled to left but Vargo was cut down at the plate, but in a smart baserunning move Miller adavanced to third. Miller would then then score easily on Julio Gomez's (Coker) single to the right side. Damewood advanced to third and was picked up by Brendan Stokes' (Northeastern) RBI double. As the pitchers rolled the Wings kept hitting and were patient. They added a single run in the fifth after Miller reached on a single, Damewood avanced him to second on a walk and then Miller stole third. Gomez then picked up an RBI on a SAC fly to right field, amking the score 3-0. The score remianed 3-0 until the top of the ninth when the wings would pick up an insurance run. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) started the inning with a single and Vargo and Miller would follow one out later with back to back singles loading the bases. Spears would score after Damewood was hit by a pitch, adding the final run en route to the 4-0 shutout.

...The Wings take on Bolivar this afternoon at home, first pitch is at 5:00. The Wings sit in third with a game and half lead on Hornell and are currently only 2 1/2 games behind of first place Elmira.

...Please be aware that the original schedule had the Allegany County game on Friday July 27th as an away game, the game has been resheduled and the Friday July 27th game will be the last regular season HOME game of the season. �
