Wings beat Pioneers, take over 1st place ...Post date July 29th, 2007

UPDATE!- The start time for the game scheduled for today against Webster has been changed to 3:00!

...The Wings beat the Elmira Pioneers last evening in Elmira in a battle for first place. The Wings posted a 4-0 victory in front of 800 Pioneer faithful. The Wings got into trouble in the first as Elmira put man on second and third with no outs, but starting pitchers Paul Bertuccini (LSU) bore down and struck out the next two and forced a ground out for the last out. The Wings would then respond in the top of the second picking up two runs after the bases were loaded with no outs. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) drove inthe two runs on an RBI single to right field. The Wings would score again once in the 4th and 5th, both off a few Elmira miscues. Bertuccini would then shut down every Pioneer threat, striking out 8 and forcing three doubleplays in his 7 innings pitched. Ed Paul (Francis Marion) would throw a perfect eighth, and Kyle Bellamy (Miami) cam in in a non-save situation but mowed down the Pioneers striking out two in the final frame. The Wings win puts them in sole possesion of first, 1/2 game ahead of the Pioneers, and secures home field advantage in the first round due to an Allegany loss last evening. However, the Wings have one game left on the schedule, a make up with Webster. Due to the fact that Elmira holds the tie breaker with the Wings, the team will have to play today at 3:00 to clinch first place. A loss would end the regular season in a tie with Elmira and due to the fact that Elmira holds the tie breaker, they would earn the first seed in the playoffs. A Wings win tonight would clinch first, and give the Wings home field advantage troughout the Western Division playoffs, at least.
