Wings lose game two, Elmira wins series, Wings season over... Post date Aug 4th, 2007
... The Wings dropped game two of the Divisional Championship Series to the Elmira Pioneers 6-1 last night at McDonough Park. The loss eliminates the Wings from the postseason, and ends a spectacular season. The Wings found themselves behind early and never really got things going against the Pioneers. A few costly errors sealed their fate. The highlight of the evening was Brendan Stokes' (Northeastern) 3-3 performance on the night. Stokes had been struggling throughout the playoffs entering last nights game as he was in an 0-15 slump in the playoffs, but he broke out big last night. Starter Paul Bertuccini (LSU) battled the best he could but could not answer the bell in the fourth, as he was battling flu like symptoms, along with teammate Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @Tyler) who also had to be pulled after 4 innings due to the same symptoms. Kyle Bellamy (University of Miami) came in for the last two innings and finished the game for the Wings striking out 3 and allowing one baserunner. Bellamy finishes the season with a 0.00 ERA, with 23 K's in 15.0 innings pitched. He allowed only 4 hits and 2 walks all season, all the while earning a team record 14 saves. Bellamy's 'pen mates aso fared very well this season as four other pitchers finished with ERA's under 2.00. They were Bertuccini 1.14 35 K's in 34 innings, Ashton Mowdy (E Oklahoma) 1.32 with 54 K's, Jason Bowman (Westchester) 1.15, with a 6-1 record, Ed Paul (Francis Marion) 1.86 with 48.1 innings pitched. A complete wrap up of the season will be posted in the next few days, once the final statitstics are finalized, please check back.
The season may be over, but this team's accomplishments will be felt around McDonough Park for some time. This team was one of the hardest working teams this franchise has seen. From day one every man on the team believed they could win it all, and made a great run for the Championship. The team played hard, hustled every day, and grew as a family. On behalf of the entire Red Wing organization we would like to thank them for their dedication, and wish them luck as they return to their respective schools. We believe they are better ballplayers, and better men, for their experience in Geneva this summer. Thanks for a terrific summer guys!
