Wings beat Nitros in opener on the road....Posted June 7th, 2008
The Wings traveled to Allegany County tonight for their opening game in the 2008 campaign. The Wellsville trip is one of the longest bus rides of the season and it's never fun to make that trip after taking a loss on the road. The good news is the trip was made much shorter with a 5-2 win tonight over the Nitros. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) earned the win in relief pitching 3 innings allowing no hits, no runs and he stuck out 3. Jason Koziol (Geroge Mason) closed the door on the Nitros in the ninth for his first save on the season. Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern) battled for 5 innings and held the Nitros to 2 runs despite having some problems staying in the strike zone, however, Greenblatt showed what he was made of making his pitches when it counted. He worked out of two seperate situations this evening, a bases loaded jam, and a second and third situation.
Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was outstanding at third base as the pitcher's best friend. Mendiola made 4 assists with two nice stabs on the hot corner. He also added 2 hits to the line score with his 2-4 night. Kevin McGrath (Westchester) started the hitting with a Ground Rule Double in the 2nd, scoring the first run of the season. John Sills' (Holy Cross) RBI triple in th 8th made the score 3-2 and would ultimately be the winning run. Full Box Score
The Wings have a quick turnaround game tomorrow afternoon. The Wings will again be on the road as the Webster Yankees host the Wings at R.I.T at 1:00PM. As the Webster Yankees continue to wait for their Webster field to be completed, they will play their home games this season split between R.I.T. and St. John Fisher. Consult the 2008 schedule for more details. The Wings start the season with three games on the road, but will open up at McDonough Park on Wednesday at 7:30PM against the Hornell Dodgers.
