Wings add to West Win, Mendiola Earns Defensive MVP... Posted July 8th, 2008

The NYCBL Western All-Stars took the summer classic last night 9-5 behind terrific performances by all three Red Wings. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was one of two players on the West roster who played the entire nine innings. Mendiola went 2-5 on the night scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He also made some nice plays in the field, one deep in the hole behind third throwing out an East runner on a bullet to first in the third inning. For his effort on defense, Mendiola earned the Tom Kenny award as the Defnsive MVP of the NYCBL All-Star Game. Doug Elliot (University of Connecticut) got the start behind the plate and managed five different pitchers on the night. He was solid behind the plate and called an excellent game. Elliot was 1-3 on the night with a run scored. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) pitched the ninth for the West. In a 9-5 game in the ninth Eastham would allow a lead off double and he would hit the next batter. He would then find his groove and strike out the next three batters. Eastham was the only pitcher on either team to strike out the side in the game. Earlier in the day Matt Perry (Holy Cross) competed in the Home Run Derby. Matt did not fare as well in his outing, as he was unable to clear the fence in his 10 out attempts. Perry, more of a line drive type hitter still leads the Wings with a .414 batting average and 16 RBI's. Congratulations guys, thanks for doing such a great job representing the Wings!
