Wings head out to play two, get one in, a loss.... Posted July 12th, 2008

The Wings headed down the Thruway to Niagara Falls to play two, to make up a rainout from earlier in the season. The problem was the rains came again, and only one game was played. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) got the start on the mound for the first game and pitched the complete game, going 6 and striking out six. Charly pitched solidly scattering 5 hits, but taking the hard luck loss as the five runs that scored turned out to all be unearned, due to three Wing errors. The Wings were first to get on the board with two runs in the first. Crusader teammates John Sills (Holy Cross), who would lead the batting with a 2-4 day, and Matt Perry (Holy Cross) would both reach on hits. Doug Elliot (UConn) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice ground out to 2nd, then Kevin McGrath (Westchester) would add a single to drive in the second run. That would be all the Wings would get in that inning, despite having runners on second and thrird with one out. Usually scoring early in a doubleheader is a good omen, however that would be the only scoring the Wings would do, and the Wings would have a hard time holding onto the ball. In the bottom of the first the Power would tie the game on a Wing's error with two out, and would add three more unearned runs later to take the game 5-2. The second game would never get started as storms came through the area and washed out that one out. That game will be replayed at a later date.

The Wings return home today to host the division leading Hornell Dodgers. Game time is earlier than normal, starting at 5:00. The Wings will then be off on Monday, and travel to Brockport on Tuesday before returning home for a long homestand from Wednesday through Saturday of next week.
