Dodgers take two from Wings.... Posted July 29th, 2008
The Wings and the Dodgers played two last evening at McDonough Park in Geneva. The story of the night was Dodger pitching in both games. The Wings would only scratch out five hits combined in both games. In the first game Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would hit a solo shot to right scoring the only run for the Wings in a 5-1 loss. The second hit of that game would come with one out in the seventh, the final inning. The Wings would leave the bases loaded with one out in the second as their only real threat. Mike Assmann (Cortland) would take the loss going 6 full innings and allowing 5 hits and 4 walks on the day. In the second game the Wings would be in the same situation, having difficulty reaching the Dodger starting pitching. The Wings would score two in the bottom of the first when Mendiola would drive in Irish teammate Will Harford (Notre Dame) on a double then score himself on an overthrow that came from left center and ended up in the vistor's dugout. The 2-0 lead would be short lived as the Dodgers would score two in the top of the second and take the lead 3-2 in the third. Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would add an RBI single in the bottom of the third but that would be as close as thw Wings would get as the Dodgers hung a 4 spot on the board in the 5th, which would end up being the final score 7-3. Dan Rouah (Lynn) took the loss for the Wings as he struggled a bit on the night allowing 9 hits while walking 4. The losses delay the Wings clinching a playoff spot. The Wings magic number remains at one, any combination of a Geneva win or a Webster and Elmira loss clinches a playoff berth for the Wings.
The schedule gets a little crazy the next few days as the start of the playoffs loom on August 1st. The Wings will play two today in Niagara Falls starting at 5:00, then travel to Allegany County for one on Wednesday. The Allegany County game could play a large role in the seeding for the playoffs, as the Wings and Nitros are currently tied for third in the Western Division. On Thursday the Wings will play their final regular season home games at McDonough park as they host the Elimra Pioneers at 1:00 to complete the game which was suspended by lightning on Saturday, then the Niagara Falls Power will stop by McDonough for a 5:00 start. Once all is said and done, the Wings will need one more win to make the playoffs, the way things stand currently they will most likely be playing game 2 of the 3 game series at home on Saturday...but there is alot of baseball left in the next three days (Elmira has a triple header today!) so stay tuned!
