Wings clinch playoff spot with sweep of DH at Niagara... Posted July 29th, 2008
The Wings clinched a playoff spot with a 16-1 and 4-3 sweep of the Niagara Falls Power at Sal Maglie Field last night. In the first game the Wings pounded out 19 hits in a 16-1 drubbing of the Power. The 2,3,4,5 hitters in the order went 13-20 with 9 RBI and 8 runs scored. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) led that group going 5-6 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was 3-5 with 3 RBI including a two run home run, his second home run in as many nights. Doug Elliot (UConn) was 2-5, and John Sills (Holy Cross) finshed at 3-5 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern) earned the win allowing one hit and five walks in five innnings pitched. Brett Stackhouse (Gardner-Webb) would hold the game striking out 4 in the final two frames. The second game started the way the first finished. The Wings would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead after three. Will Harford (Notre Dame) and Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) would go 2-4 with a double each, and Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would lead the hitters in the second game with a 3-4 peformance and a run scored. The Power would amke it interesting though. In the ninth with the score 4-2 they would get the winning run to the plate. The Power would plate one run in the ninth, the final batter with runners on first and third, would line out to Uphouse who would have to make a running grab to save the game on a tailing line drive. �
