Wings split two, twin bill again this evening... Posted July 28th, 2008

The Wings split a doubleheader last evening against the Brockport Riverbats at McDonough Park last night with a 4-1 win and a 2-0 loss. In the first game all the runs the Wings would need would score in the first inning when, with bases loaded, Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would hit a bases clearing double making the score 3-0 after one. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) would hold the 'Bats for six strong innings allowing just 5 hits while striking out 9. Brockport would be able to manufacture a run in the fourth, but that would be all they would get against the duo of Bashara and Kyle Eastham (South Florida) who would earn the save with an inning of no hit relief. The Wings would add an insurance run off a Matt Perry (Holy Cross) RBI double in the sixth. Kevin McGrath led all Wings hitters with a 2-3 performance.

In the second game the Wings would muster only 5 hits, that wouldn't be so bad in a low scoring game, but all the hits came in seperate innings. Steve Forster (St. John's) would pitch a solid 6 innings allowing one earned run and six hits. Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) would finish off the final inning striking out one. The pitchers kept the Wings in it, but the batters just couldn't put any hits together in the second game and would drop the contest 2-0. The split increases the Wings lead over the fourth place Nitros to 2 full games, and also reduces the Wings magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one. Any combination of a Wings win or a Webster loss will clinch a playoff berth for the Wings.

The Wings are home again tonight for another doubleheader. Tonight's double header is the second of three doubleheaders in a row! Tonight the Wings host division leading Hornell for a 5:00 start with the second game immediately following. The Wings will then travel to Niagara Falls for, yes, another doubleheader at Sal Malgie field also starting at 5:00. It's playoff time! Come on out to the park and help the boys bring home the Championship this season!
