Wings lose game one, home for must-win tonight... Post date Aug 3rd, 2007

...The Wings dropped game one at Elmira last night, but it can not be said that the Wings did not have their chances. The Wings left 11 men on base last evening and out hit the Pioneers 11-8, the only place on the box score that matters is the runs column and Elmira beat the Wings there, 6-3. The Wings found themselves down 2-1 going into the top of the sixth inning and needed to get something going. Julio Gomez (Coker) and Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) started the frame with back-to-back singles, and then Cory LePlante (Minnesota St) bunted tem over a base. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am), then hit a single that drove in Gomez, tying the score at 2. Immediately following the hit, lightning was sighted near the ballpark, so a 2 hour delay ensued. Following the delay, the Wings rally was ended and no other runs would score in the inning. Ed Paul (Francis Marion) would return to the mound after the delay, but did not seem to have the same stuff he had before the delay. He was replaced by Tom Schiller (MCC) after 5 1/3 innings pitched. Schiller inherited a few runners in the sixth and between the two pitchers aother three runs would score making it 5-2. Schiller finished the game for the Wings allowing one run and striking out 4 in 2 2/3 innings. The Wings would try to rally one more time in the top of the seventh when Chris Vargo (Richmond) would start the inning with a single, and move to 2nd on a drag bunt by Brock Miller (Gardner Webb). Miller would reach base, but would get caught up by a pick off throw from the catcher, and Vargo would advance to third on the play. Vargo would then score on Gomez's RBI double to center field, but as was the theme of the night, Gomez would be stranded at second for the second time of the night, Gomez went 3-5 with 2 RBI on the night. That would be all the Wings could put together, as the Pioneers would add one more in the eighth, making the score 6-3, which would be the final score. The Wings loss puts them in a precarious situation, in a three game series, another loss would be the end of the season for the Wings. The boys return home tonight to host the Pioneers, and hope to send the Pio's back to Elmira with a loss and force them to play host to the Wings Saturday night for game three. The game tonight at McDonough Park is at 7:30. Come on out and make some noise and help your boys of summer push the series to game three!

Wing win series, travel to Elmira tonight for next round... Posted August 2nd, 2007

...The Wings came into last nights game needing a win to stave off elminiation in the short series with the Nitros. The Wings sent Jason Bowman (Westchester) to be the "Stopper". Bowman has been one of the most consistant Wing pitchers on the season witha 6-1 record and an ERA at 1.15, and continued his brilliance last night. Bowman worked hard over 7 2/3 innings scattering 10 hits and allowing 4 earned runs on 6 strikeouts. His perofrmace was backed up by Lance Rhodes (SE Missouri St). Rhodes closed down the Nitros allowing two hits and striking out three over the last 1 1/3. The Wings got on the board first, and early scoring one run in the first when Chris Vargo (Richmond) reached on an error and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Vargo scored on an RBI double by Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler). The Wings would add another run in the second after Nick Spisek (Westchester) walked, and advanced to third on a Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) and Vargo hit. Spisek then scored from third on a wild pitch, but the Wings would leave the bases loaded in the inning. The Nitros would not go quietly, as they would erase the 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth scoring 2 runs, tying the score. The Wings would answer right back in the bottom of the inning scoring 2 to take a 4-2 lead. Julio Gomez (Coker) would start the rally getting hit with his fourth pitch in three games, Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) would both single to load the bases with no out, then Spisek, who went 2-2 on the night with 2 RBI and 2 walks, would drive a ball into center field for a 2 RBI single. The Wings would add to their lead in the sixth scoring 3 more runs, the big play of the inning was after Brock Miller (Gardner Webb) reached on a walk and advanced to third on a Damewood single. Miller would score stealing home on a double steal play when Damewood broke for second. By the end of six the score would be 7-2. Again the Nitros would rally, scoring 2 runs in the top of the eighth making the score 7-4, but that would be as close as they would get. In the bottom of the inning the Wings would get those runs back as Damewood would walk and Gomez would hit a line shot homerun just to the left of the right field score board, his sixth of the season, making the score 9-4, a score that would hold for the final. The Wings win the best of three series 2-1 and advance to the Western Division Championship Series tonight as the travel to Elmira for game one, first pitch is at 7:00 and the game can be heard live on TeamLine. The boys will return home tomorrow, Friday August 3rd for game two at Big Mac, first pitch is at 7:30. Wings lose close one to split three game series, home tonight... Post date Aug 1st, 2007

...The Wings lost a close one last night in Wellsville as the Nitros beat the Wings 3-2. The win was a result of yet another walk off win, this time for th bad guys. The Wings found themselves in comeback mode again last night after falling behind 2-0 after 4 innings. This time it would be a bit harder to manufacture the runs since they were only able to muster four hits on the night. Ashto Mowdy (E Oklahoma) pitched well, striking out 9, but walking three and allowing 6 hits in his six innings work. The runs allowed were unearned due to fielding errors. The Wings looked like they were in deep trouble losing 2-0 going into the eighth, but they found a way to rally, scoring one in the eighth When Brock Miller (Gradner Webb) walked, then Julio Gomez (Coker) ws hit by a pitch, then Ryan Hypke (Francis Marion) walked loading the bases with two outs. The run then scored as Miller crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the ninth, behind by one run, the boys knew they needed something to happen. Chris Vargo (Richmond) singled to start the frame, and Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) bunted him to second, Vrago then avanced to third on a wild pitch. Nick Spisek (Westchester) then drove Vargo in on a SAC fly to center, tying the game at 2. The Wings felt the momentum changing, but that was short lived. After a fielding error, a bunt single, and a walk, the Nitros had the bases loaded with no outs. The next batter would ground weakly to first baseman Brendan Stokes (Northeastern), a ball which had a lot of english on it, and Stokes would not be able to make the play at home to prevent the winning run from scoring. In the end, the Nitros force the final and deciding game three tonight at McDonough Park at 7:30. The winner of tonight's game will face the Elmira Pioneers in the first game of the Western Division Championship tomorrow in Elmira, as Elmira beat Hornell 4-3 last night, sweeping the series.

Wings walk off to take 1-0 lead in short series...Post date July 31st, 2007

...The Wings came to the park last night ready to start their three game series againast the Allegany County Pioneers. Since the NYCBL playoffs are all a best of three series, the boys were hoping to get out to a fast start. That hope was quickly changed into comeback mode as the Wings found themselves down 4-0 after 3 innings. Starting pitcher Dusty Odenbach (University of Connecticut) never found the groove and struggled from the beginning, allowing 4 walks and three hits on 74 pithes in 3 innings. The Wings slowly chipped away at the Nitro lead scoring 2 in the fourth when Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) lead off with double and then scored on a Julio Gomez (Coker) double. Gomez then scored from third after advancing to third on a fly ball, when Chris Vargo (Richmond) drove him in on a single. It would be 4-2 at the end of 4 full innings. The Wings would add another in the fifth when Miller would beat out a slow ground ball to the pitcher, then advance to third on the errant throw to first. Andrew Damewood (university of Texas @ Tyler) would pick up the RBI on a ground ball to second. The Nitros would pad their 4-3 lead by scoring one in the seventh and ninth, making the score 6-3 going to the bottom of the ninth. The Wings would nowneed to have a huge rally to prevent themselves from going down 1-0 in the series. The inning started with a single by Nick Spisek (Westchester), then, with one out the gates opened. Cory Leplante (Minnesota St.) singled moving Spisek to third, and Miller walked loading the bases. The winning run was now at the plate in the form of Andrew Damewood, Damewood walked scoring Spisek. Gomez was then hit by a pitch, scoring LePlante, the score; 6-5. Up came Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) with the chance to win the game. Parkinson jerked the first offering deep down the left field line but foul. Parkinson found himself in a 1-2 hole, and then ripped one at the third baseman, the third baseman threw home trying to force out Miller, the lead runner, but he threw it in the dirt and the ball then found it's way through to the screen, scoring Miller, and Damewood close behind. The Wings would end the inning with the 7-6 win on 4 runns in the ninth with one out. The Wings now hold a 1-0 lead in the best of three series and travel to Allegany tonight hoping to sweep the Nitros. Game time is 7:00 and can be heard on TeamLine. If needed, the third game of the series would be played Wednesday night at McDonough Park at 7:30.

Wings lose to Webster, hand title to Elmira, playoff game at home tonight.... Post date July 30th, 2007

...After an emotional win Saturday night against Elmira, a win which put the Wings in first place, the Wings had a quick turn around game Sunday afternoon at 3:00 against Webster to decide the regular season divisional championship. The Wings held a 1/2 game lead after beating the Pioneers the night before, but with one make up game remaining on the schedule they would need a win against the depleted Yankees to clinch the division. The Wings jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead after 3 innings, and they looked like they were on their way to the Pennant. However, the Wings pitchers were on pitch counts to save their arms for the playoffs, and they never seemed to find their groove, as a result the Wings were unable to pull out the win losing to Webster 11-6. The loss put the Wings in a tie for first with Elmira, but the Pioneers win the Division based on their 4-2 record against the Wings in head-to-head games this season. The loss also broke a season high 10 game win streak. The Wings finsh the regular season 26-16, including a 14-3 run since the All-Star game. The Wings still go into the playoffs as the hottest team in the league, despite the loss. The Wings start their playoff run as they face off with the Allegany County Nitros tonight at 7:30 in the first game of the three game series. The Wings will then travel to Allegany tomorrow night, and will return to McDonough Park Wednesday if needed. The playoff picture in the West as it stands:

Elmira(#1) vs. Hornell (#4): Mon@Elmira 7PM, Tue@Hornell 7PM, Wed if needed @Elmira 7PM

Geneva (#2) vs. Allegany (#3): Mon@Geneva 7:30PM, Tue@Allegany 7PM, Wed if needed @Geneva 7:30PM

The Divisional Championship Series and the NYCBL Championship Series match ups will also be a three game series with the higher seed enjoying home field advantage.

Wings beat Pioneers, take over 1st place ...Post date July 29th, 2007

UPDATE!- The start time for the game scheduled for today against Webster has been changed to 3:00!

...The Wings beat the Elmira Pioneers last evening in Elmira in a battle for first place. The Wings posted a 4-0 victory in front of 800 Pioneer faithful. The Wings got into trouble in the first as Elmira put man on second and third with no outs, but starting pitchers Paul Bertuccini (LSU) bore down and struck out the next two and forced a ground out for the last out. The Wings would then respond in the top of the second picking up two runs after the bases were loaded with no outs. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) drove inthe two runs on an RBI single to right field. The Wings would score again once in the 4th and 5th, both off a few Elmira miscues. Bertuccini would then shut down every Pioneer threat, striking out 8 and forcing three doubleplays in his 7 innings pitched. Ed Paul (Francis Marion) would throw a perfect eighth, and Kyle Bellamy (Miami) cam in in a non-save situation but mowed down the Pioneers striking out two in the final frame. The Wings win puts them in sole possesion of first, 1/2 game ahead of the Pioneers, and secures home field advantage in the first round due to an Allegany loss last evening. However, the Wings have one game left on the schedule, a make up with Webster. Due to the fact that Elmira holds the tie breaker with the Wings, the team will have to play today at 3:00 to clinch first place. A loss would end the regular season in a tie with Elmira and due to the fact that Elmira holds the tie breaker, they would earn the first seed in the playoffs. A Wings win tonight would clinch first, and give the Wings home field advantage troughout the Western Division playoffs, at least.
