Wings split two after 6 1/2 hours!.... Posted July 24th, 2008

The Wings split two with the Nitros last night at a damp McDonough Park. The first game was a continuation of a game suspended in the seventh on June 17th. At the time the game was 11-6 Nitros, and it finished excatly the same score. In that game Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) and Matt Perry (Holy Cross) both went 3-4 with an RBI each.

The big story of the night was the second game which would last 5 hours and end after midnight. Only the most faithful fans were left in the stands at the end. The Wings sent Dan Rouah (Lynn) to the mound to start the game at 7:02 PM. Rouah struggled throughout his 3.2 innings walking 8 while allowing 3 hits. He was also the victim of several errors resulting in only 2 earned runs out of the 7 runs allowed in his stint. The Wings would find themselves in a 4-0 deficit after two, but would score 2 in the bottom of the third cutting the score to 4-2 on an RBI double by Perry. The momentum would be short lived as the Nittros would add three in the top of the fourth as the Wings would add three errors to their line score. From there the Wings would settle down, making outstanding plays throughout the game, keeping it close. In the bottom of the fifth the Wings would add a single run as John Sills (Holy Cross) after reaching on an error, would advance three separate bases and scoring on three wild pitches. Pete Lompado (Minnesota St) would hold the game for 3.1 innings striking out three and allowing one hit, and Kris Mengle (George Mason) would come in in the seventh and throw 6 innings of absolutely stellar relief keeping the Wings in it to the 13th while striking out 6 and allowing no walks and two hits. How did they get to the 13th and beyond? That came in the bottom of the eighth, when the Wings scored 4 runs to tie the game. That inning featured an RBI double by Mendiola and an 2 RBI double by Bill Cupello (Holy Cross). The Wings would leave the bases loaded at the end of the inning, but tied the game 7-7. The score would remain the same for 10 more innings as both Nitro and Wing pitchers kept runners off base. engle finished up the 13th then Kyle Eastham (South Florida) would take his turn on the mound going 3 innings through the 16th striking out one and allowing one hit. Jason Koziol (George Mason) would be the fifth and final pitcher on the night pitching two innings striking out three. Finally in the bottom of the 18th something would happen after 10 scoreess innings. Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would start with a lead off double to right center, Sills would follow up with one out with a single to right but not deep enough to score Vahalik. Then Perry, with the infield playing in with one out, would squirt a ball between the shortstop and third baseman driving in Vahalik at 12:02AM, five hours after the first pitch! The anatomy of an 18 inning game: Combined 24 hits, 11 errors, 125 AB's, 33 strikeouts, and 12 pitchers used.

The Wings travel to Brockport for a 5:00 start. The next Wings home game is Saturday at 7:30 against the Elmira Pioneers.

Wings travel to Bolivar, win suspended game... Posted July 23rd, 2008

On short notice the Wings travelled back down to Bolivar yesterday morning to finish the suspended game from Sunday afternon. The Wings were up 2-0 after four when the rain cam on Sunday, and the Wings would add another and hold on for a 3-2 win. Mike Assmann (Cortland), Brett Stackhouse (Gadner-Webb), and Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) combined for the two hitter. Stackhouse was credited with the win. Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) had a 2-4 day including a run scored. The win coupled with an Allegany County loss leap-frogs the Wings into third and gives the Wings a half game lead over the Nitros. The Nitros will be in town tonight for two games, first a suspended completion at 5:30, then a full nine at 7:30. The top four teams in each division make the post season, and if the Wings stay the course they should be playing in August!

Wings get four in before rains come, again!.... Posted July 20th, 2008

Travelling to Bolivar the Wings were hoping to get away from the rain, and actually play a game. The game started under blue skies but that quickly changed and by the fourth inning the game was delayed then soon after, suspended because of...RAIN! The Wings were able to put two on the board by the bottom of the fourth before being washed out and will take a 2-0 lead with them into the completion of the game. The completion is tentatively scheduled for an afternoon start on July 30th, as the Wings will be in the area to take on Allegany County in the evening that day. No start time has been determined. All schedule changes (and there are alot of them) can be found on the GRW schedule page.

The Wings are home tonight to host the Hornell Dodgers at 7:30 PM. Hopefully the rain that has been lingering will make an exit and we can get a whole game in this evening.

The Wings will try again Sunday, traveling to Bolivar to take on the AIA's. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00. The Wings return home on Monday for a 7:30 start against the Western Division leading Hornell Dodgers.

Wings on a roll win in front of 1,100....Posted July 19th, 2008

In front of the biggest crowd of the season, and on State Senator Mike Nozolio night at Big Mac, the Wings beat the AIA's 7-2 behind masterful pitching by Steve Forster (St. John's). Following a pre-game ceremony which saw Mike Nozolio handing the City of Geneva a check for $15,000 for improvements to the park Forster would then mow down AIA hitters for seven innings. In seven, Forster would allow5 hits, one earned run, and would strike out a season best ten batters. Forster would earn the victory with his solid performance. The Wings batters again pounded out double digit hits on the night. Leading the team was Nick Spears (Texas Pan Am) who would go 4-4 on the night with two runs scored. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would add a 2-5 night and 3 RBI . Bolivar got on the board first in the top of the first going up 1-0. The lead would be short lived as the Wings would grab the lead in the bottom of the second 2-1 and would never look back. The Wings move to within a half game of third place Allegany County with the win, and strtech their lead in front of fifth place Webster to 3.5 games, further padding their playoff lead.

The Wings are home tonight against aforementioned Webster and hope to extend their playoff padding as well as move up on the division leaders. Tonight is State Assemblyman Kolb night at Big Mac, first pitch is 7:30. Come on out and help the boys push to the playoffs in the last weeks of the season.

Wings, Mendiola walk off with the win in 10.... Posted July 18th, 2008

The Wings have a certain way of breaking the hearts of the Elmira Pioneers, it almost goes by script as the Wings have beaten the Pios in the same way all four times this season. It goes something like this: The Wings take an early lead and allow for the Pios to slowly chip at it, then the Pios take a late game lead, only to have the Wings win it on their final at bat. Last night went according to script. The league leading pitching staff held the Pios to three runs on the night. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) pitched 6 solid innings scattering 4 hits and striking out 6. The trio of Kris Mengle (George Mason), Aaron Brett (Central Missouri), and Tim Crabbe (Westmont) would hold the game for 4 innings. The Pios would score a run in 8th to take a 3-2 lead on a passed ball. The Wings would go quietly in the botom of the inning, then Brett would hold the top of the ninth setting up the heartbreak again. In the 9th Tom Legregni (Hofstra) would pinch hit and drag a bunt just beating the throw for a base hit. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) would successfully bunt Legregni to second with one out. Doug Elliot (UConn) would ground out, and Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) would be down to his last strike when he would rip a double in the right center gap, making the score 3-3. Vahalik would be stranded at second to send the game into extra innings. After Crabbe held the Pio's in the top of the 10th. The Wings would finish the heartbreaker. With one out and no one on in the 10th, Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would come to the plate. Eddy would hit the Pio's second pitch on a line to deep left field, the ball was hit hard enough to go out but there was question whether the ball was high enough to clear the wall on the line drive. 360 feet later the ball cleared the Geneva General Hospital sign in left field giving the Wings a walk off win. Mendiola and Perry would both go 3-4 on the night to lead the team as they hung 12 hits on he Pios. The Wings now hold a 4-0 series advantage against the Pios, and more importantly a 2.5 game lead on the final playoff spot with the win.

The Wings are home tonight against the Bolivar AIA's on State Senator Mike Nozolio Night at McDonough Park. Senator Nozolio Night is always a huge draw and we look forward to seeing all of you out at the old park tonight. Admission tonight is free and courtesy of Senator Nozolio. Game time is 7:30 and gates open at 6:00. See you tonight!

Wild weather at BigMac, only one game completed...Posted July 17th, 2008

The Wings and Power were scheduled for two last night, the first game was to complete a suspended game from June 28th and the second a compete nine inning game. The problem again was the weather. The first game started in the seventh with the Power at bat with runners on first and second with one out. Prior to the suspension the game was tight at 0-0 and a pitchers duel, it would remain that to the end. Steve Forster (St. John's) would get the "relief" start and would advance the runners on a wild pitch, then walk the next batter intentionally to load the bases. The only runs in the game would score on a snap throw that would go errant by catcher Nick Spears (UT PanAm). Spears would try to gun down the runner on third when it appeared the runner had lost track of the count on the batter, and would start toward home. The throw would sail over Will Harford's (Notre Dame) head at third scoring two runs. Forster would get out of the inning, and Brett Stackhouse (Gardner Webb) would complete the last two innings allowing no further damage while striking out three. The Wings could not figure out the Power's Harrison Helms (Niagara University) as he earned the complete game shutout 2-0, a complete game that took 19 days to complete. The Wings hold ground in the playoff race with a 2 game lead for the final playoff spot as the trailing Webster Yankees lost to Allegany County 7-2 in a rain shortened game. The second game of the "doubleheader" was postponed because of rain as the skys opened up during the between games pause. The second game will be made up on July 31st should the game impact the playoff race or standings.

The Wings are home tonight hosting the Elmira Pioneers at 7:30PM. The Wings and Pio's have built quite a rivalry over the past two years and the Wings have beaten the Pio's twice this season in their final at bats at Dunn Field. There's bound to be some heat tonight when these teams meet, come on out and experienece the Route 14 rivalry for yourself!

Wings hold on in ninth to beat Riverbats... Posted July 16th, 2008

The Riverbats only have 9 losses on the season but three of those losses have come at the hands of the Red Wings. The Wings upped their season series lead aginst the 'Bats to 3-1 with a 5-4 win last night in Brockport. Mike Assmann (Cortland) got the start on the mound and struggled a bit going 4 innings striking out 3 but walking 3 and allowing 5 hits. In the fourth the 'Bats would take a 3-2 lead with back-to-back homeruns against Assmann and Tim Crabbe (Westmont). Crabbe would then shut down the 'Bats the rest of the inning, striking out 2. The duo of Dan Rouah (Lynn) and Pete Lompado (Minnesota St.) would hold the 'Bats scoreless and hitless for three innings, through the eighth. The Wings batters keep the pressure on the opposing pitching, again reaching double digits with 10 hits on the night. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) led the hit parade with a 4-5 performance and added 3 RBI, including an RBI single in the ninth which, at that time was an insurance run, but wound up to be the game winner. Going into to ninth the Wings would hold a 5-3 lead, Jason Koziol (George Mason) would be inserted on the mound as the closer. Things ended up getting a little interesting from there. With two outs Bosnik would strike out on a 59' fastball which would shoot over Nick Spears' (UT Pan Am) head to the backstop. Bosnik would eventually score after stealing second and a Taylor double, amking the score 5-4. Koziol would then hit the next batter with a 1-2 fastball, putting the winning run at first still with two out. However, Koziol would bear down and strike out Macklin for the final out preserving the 5-4 win.

Notes: Perry has now taken a commanding lead as the batting leader in the NYCBL at .438. Second place hitting JD Martinez of Saratoga is a distant .409 through games played yesterday. The Wings, as a team lead the NYCBL with a .297 team batting average.

The Wings are home tonight against the Power of Niagara Falls. This is again a "non-traditional" doubleheader where the first game will start at 6:00 to complete a suspended game from June 28th. The situation is top of the seventh, one out and runners on first and second for the Power, the score 0-0. The second game will be played in it's entirety imediately following the completion of the first game. Tonight is little league night, all little leaguers get in free, however our normal Wednesday "have a catch with a Wing" is cancelled due to the doubleheader. The Wings will be home the next four nights through Saturday all starting at 7:30PM. Thursday is $1 night with $1 hot dogs and draft beer.
