June 19th, 2004

First the good news, the Wings scored first in the top of the first inning tonight. The bad news, it was a walk with the bases loaded and one out and it was the only run scored with the bases loaded. The really bad news, that's the only run they could muster the rest of the game. The Raptors scored once in the third and again in the bottom of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth the bases were loaded with Raptors and the count was one and two with no outs when the lights went out, literaly! The lights at Colburn Park went dark just as Sean McWilliams was about to deliver a pitch. This plunged the field into darkness for about 45 minutes until the power was restored. When the power came back on it only took three pitches to decide the Wings fate. Three straight balls walked in the winning run. The call on the fourth ball was controversial. The Umpire's zone fluctuated with each inning and what seemed a "got him looking strikeout" became a winning walk-off-walk.

Today, Father's Day, the Wings host the Genesee Valley Riverbats at 3:00. Come on out with your Dad and enjoy a beautiful afternoon and a game too!

The Wings finally broke out the bats this evening. It all started on the first pitch when Clay Copeland (University of Texas at Tyler) took a first pitch fastball over the wall in right. The Wings jumped out to a quick lead that they would never relinquish. Copeland added another solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Dustin Sommer (University of Toledo) and Craig King (St. Bonaventure) added timely RBI hits to pad the Geneva lead. Brandon Mendola (MCC) pitched a solid 7.1 innings giving up only one earned run and scttering 4 hits. Dusty Johnson (University of Texas at Tyler) completed the last 1.2 innings in scoreless relief, getting out of a one out, bases loaded jam in the eighth.

Today, Wednesday, the team travels to Alfred for a double header. The first game starts at 3:00 with second to immediately to follow. The Wings will face Alfred again at home on Friday following an off day on Thursday. The Friday start time is 7:00. Come out and help the Wings continue their winning streak!

The wings hung on with the Hornell Dodgers for 7 innings today despite committing 6 errors. The wings were able to keep with the Dodgers as both teams posted three runs each in the first seven innings, but in the end Hornell made the most if it's chances as they scored with the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Monday is an off day for the Wings as several of the players will travel to Alfred for a scouting day. Tuesday the wings will face Genesee Valley at home starting at 5:00. Come out and help the Wings start themselves on a winning streak!

Although the wings battled back from three different deficits, they still came up a run short in the bottom of the eleventh inning. The wings clawed back to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning with a single run. Alfred scored in the top of the tenth, and the Wings responded with one of their own in the bottomm of the tenth. The big hit came in the top of the eleventh inning when the Alfred first baseman hit his second home run of the game, this time a two run two out laser which created a loud ball on metal sound as it pounded of the right field scoreboard. The home run gave Alfred a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the eleventh, but the wings weren't quite done. After scoring one run on a sac fly to left field, the Wings left the tying run on second base.

The team showed alot of heart battling back from deficits three times in three innnigs, but the loss dropped their record to 3-4. The Wings face Wayne County tonight at 7:00. The team is also home Sunday vs. Division leading Hornell at 3:00. Come on out and support your team!

Late Update:
The Red Wings won tonight 3-1 with some clutch hitting first by firstbaseman Dustin Sommer who hit a monster home run early in the game. In the bottom of the eighth Russ Madison put the Wings ahead for good with a two run triple.

I wish I had more news, but yours truly missed the game too. Thanks to Clay Copeland for the information we have here.

Tomorrow is an off day for the team. The next game is a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday at 3:00. The Wings will play host to the Allegany Nitros, so pack a lunch and join us for a full day of baseball at McDonough!

June 3rd, 2004

Opening day didn't turn out quite as planned. Although the weather was beautiful and the sun was shinning, the Wings just could not get their bats to wake up. Athough they threatened a few times with runners in scoring position, they just couldn't break through in the runs column.

Starting pitcher Brandon Mendola took the loss despite throwing a complete game on only 97 pitches. The River Bats broke through in the top of the sixth inning scoring two unearned runs. Their rally was cut short by a spectacular throw by Center Filelder Ray Ciancagilini and tag at home by Catcher Russ Madison.

The next game is scheduled at home on Friday at 7:00 against the Wayne County Raptors, come on out and support your team.

Today's the day, Opening Day! The Geneva Red Wings will be hosting the Genesee Vallet River Bats in NYCBL league play. Both teams open their season tonight with a 0-0 record.

The Wings are slowly taking form as more team members make their way to McDonough Park. Some of our players continue to play for their college teams as they have made regional playoffs. This is the case for our St. Bonaventure players. Bona' has qualified for the field of 64 and will play Miami in the first round in double elimination format. Their game is scheduled for Friday June 4th at 7:00. Results of this game and the Red Wings home opener will be posted right here as they become available.

The Geneva Red Wings will open the 2004 season on Thursday June 3rd. The Wings will host the Genesee Valley River Bats right here at cozy McDonough Park at 5:00. Come out and support your boys of summer, we have a great team and hope to bring the Pennant back to Geneva this year!

Last season the boys finished in second place in the Western Division of the NYCBL. In the Divisional Playoffs they came up just a bit short. This season promises to be just as exciting as last with Skipper Dave Herbst returning with a solid core of last year's talent.
