Wings flat at Hornell, ready to come home.... Posted June 16th, 2008

The Wings had a very flat night last evening against the Hornell Ddogers as they lost 8-2 droping their record under .500 for the first time all season. Highlights were few as the Wings allowed 11 hits, 6 errors and the pitchers combiined to walk 9 batters. All in all the result could have been much worse, but some timely pitching took the Dodgers out of some big innings. The Wings were only able to put together 4 hits on the night, all singles. Two of those four hits came of the bat of John Sills (Holy Cross) on his 2-4 performance. The boys have an off day today before a two game set at home starting Tuesday.

A bright spot note from Saturday's game against Bolivar was missed. Nick Spears (Texas Pan Am) hit the Wings first home run of the season in the 6th inning making the score 4-2. It's always nice to get credit for the long ball, sorry Nick!

AIA's 4 run 2nd inning is Wings undoing....Posted June 15th, 2008

The Wings gave up 4 runs in the 2nd last night, which ultimately proved to be enough to put the boys away for good. The Wings left the top of the first with what has become a customary early lead. Doug Elliot (UConn) doubled with two outs n the first, moved over to third on a base hit by Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame), and scored on a double steal. That lead would be short lived as the AIA's would score four in the bottom of the second off Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern). Greenblatt would be a tale of two pitchers on the night. After allowing the 4 runs he would strike out 8 but allow 10 hits. The Wings would draw within two with one run in the ninth, but would leave the tying run at the plate.

The Wings spend one more day on the road before rturning to McDonough Park on Tuesday. The boys will spend Fathers Day evening in Hornell taking on the Dodgers in a 7PM start. The broadcast can agian be heard live on TeamLine.

Wings win another on the road 4-2 in 11 innings...Posted June 13th, 2008

Following a 42 minute rain delay in Elmira tonight the Wings rallied to tie a 2-1 score in the seventh 2-2. Mike Assman (Cortland) pitched five strong innings for the Wings but recieved a no decision for his effort. Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) benefited from the extra innnings finishing the game with 1 2/3 strong innings, and earned the win. The 2-2 score was broken in the top of the eleventh when, with bases loaded and two outs, Nick Spears (Texas Pan Am) hit a single to right field, scoring two. The Pioneers went down meekly in the bottom part of the frame, ending the game and sending the boys back to the bus with yet another road win.

It's a good thing the boys like to win on the road, they will have to do that a bit more before settling in at home. The Wings travel to Bolivar tomorrow, Saturday, for a 7:00 start against the A's, and Sunday they hit the road once again to meet up with the Dodgers of Hornell. All games both home and away can be heard live and free on TeamLine.

The boys show some fight but come up short... Posted June 13th, 2008

The Wings lost their second straight at home last evening against the Riverbats, dropping their record to 2-2 on the season. The Wings went up early scoring one in the bottom of the first as Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) started the inning with a single up the middle on his way to a 3-5 night. He also scored 3 times including the first run in the first when Dan Sherwood (Toledo) moved Uphouse in on a ground out to third. Sherwood would add a hard drive RBI double to centerfield in the ninth drawing the Wings to within 2 runs. The Wings battled back twice in the game, once taking a 4-3 lead in the third. The Wings down 8-5 going into the ninth scored one on Sherwood's drive but were unable to plate the equalizer as a big rally was squashed with the second out being made on a controvesial play at the plate. Ultimately the Wings took the loss 8-6. You can be assured that hitting will not be the Wings problem this year, along with the performances listed earlier, Nick Spears (Texas Pan Am) and Matt Perry (Holy Cross) both had two hit nights with an RBI each.

Steve Forster (St John's) took the loss on the night, a night in which four Wings pitchers tried to figure out the umpire's tight strike zone. Aaron Brett (Central Missouri), the third pitcher to toe the rubber on the night held the 'Bats scoreless for 3 full innings allowing one hit and striking out three. Jason Koziol (George Mason) closed out the game in the ninth facing 3 batters and striking out one.

The Wings travel to rival Elmira tonight for a contest against the Pioneers. First pitch is at 7:00PM and Elmira's home team broadcast can be heard live and free on TeamLine.

Wings drop season home opener 7-3 to the Dodgers (updated)... Posted June 11th, 2008

After falling behind 5-1 after 4 innings the Wings loaded the bases with no out in their half of the fourth but failed to plate a run. The bats were quiet until the eighth when the Wings attempted to battle back from a then, 7-1. Dan Sherwood (Toledo) made it a bit closer by driving a ball just inside the third base line for a 2 RBI double. Ultimately the Dodgers took the game 7-3. The Wings hoped for a few more in the ninth, but couldn't scratch out any other runs. Doug Elliot (UConn) had a nice night at the plate going 3-4 with three singles and a run scored pushing his early season average up to .545. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) also continued his hot hitting goign 2-3 and with that the Wings have a pair of hitters batting a solid early season .545. A quartet of pitchers went to the mound on the night, however, Kris Mengle (George Mason) ended up taking the loss on the night with 4 innings pitched and 5 earned runs.

The Wings are right back at it again tonight, Thursday, as they host the Brockport Riverbats at 7:30PM at ol' McDonough Park. Come on out and meet your 2008 Wings!

The Wings traveled again for the second straight day to start the season and rode home again with the win. Dan Rouah (Lynn University) took the mound for the start on a hot and humid afternoon and pitched 8 strong innings scattering 6 hits, struck out 7 and allowed only 2 earned runs. Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) came in in the ninth and closed the door on the Yankees earning his first save of the season. The Wings bats were just as effective pounding out 11 hits on the aternoon. The Wings only scoring occurred with 2 in the second and 3 in the third inning. Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo) lead the team with a 3-4 afternoon. Kevin McGrath (Westchester) added to his RBI totals with an RBI single in both the second and third innning. Wings beat Nitros in opener on the road....Posted June 7th, 2008

The Wings traveled to Allegany County tonight for their opening game in the 2008 campaign. The Wellsville trip is one of the longest bus rides of the season and it's never fun to make that trip after taking a loss on the road. The good news is the trip was made much shorter with a 5-2 win tonight over the Nitros. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) earned the win in relief pitching 3 innings allowing no hits, no runs and he stuck out 3. Jason Koziol (Geroge Mason) closed the door on the Nitros in the ninth for his first save on the season. Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern) battled for 5 innings and held the Nitros to 2 runs despite having some problems staying in the strike zone, however, Greenblatt showed what he was made of making his pitches when it counted. He worked out of two seperate situations this evening, a bases loaded jam, and a second and third situation.

Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was outstanding at third base as the pitcher's best friend. Mendiola made 4 assists with two nice stabs on the hot corner. He also added 2 hits to the line score with his 2-4 night. Kevin McGrath (Westchester) started the hitting with a Ground Rule Double in the 2nd, scoring the first run of the season. John Sills' (Holy Cross) RBI triple in th 8th made the score 3-2 and would ultimately be the winning run. Full Box Score

The Wings have a quick turnaround game tomorrow afternoon. The Wings will again be on the road as the Webster Yankees host the Wings at R.I.T at 1:00PM. As the Webster Yankees continue to wait for their Webster field to be completed, they will play their home games this season split between R.I.T. and St. John Fisher. Consult the 2008 schedule for more details. The Wings start the season with three games on the road, but will open up at McDonough Park on Wednesday at 7:30PM against the Hornell Dodgers.

Wings work out the bugs in exhibition vs Rome...Posted June 5th, 2008

The Wings hosted the Rome Thunderbolts of the ECBL last evening at McDonough park as tune up for both teams seasons. The game marked the first time the players had an opportunity to play together outside of the practice field. Although the Wings dropped the game 7-4 there were many bright spots. The coaches were looking to see if the players could make both physical and mental in-game game adjustments and saw both from every player on the team. Even though the boys fell behind 3-0 after 1 inning they battled back to keep the game close and eventually to pull within 3. Since this was a exhibition most f the pitching staff were involoved in the result. Seven pitches combined for 13 strikeouts on the night, and allowed only 3 earned runs. At the plate Chris Altieri (Florida International) drove in the first run of the game and went 2-4. Doug Elliot (University of Connecticutt) added two singles to the line score with his 2-2 performance.

The Wings have two days off before they travel to Allegany County for their NYCBL opener against the Nitros on Saturday evening. Game time is at 7:00PM and every pitch both home and away can be heard live on TeamLine, Just click the Team Line logo found at the top of this page to listen to Geneva Red Wings Baseball.

The Wings will open their home schedule next week on Wednesday June 11th at 7:30PM as they host the Hornell Dodgers.

'07 GRW Bertuccini and Bellamy help Tigers and 'Canes move into Super-Regionals.... Posted June 2nd, 2008

Paul Bertuccini, who played for the '07 Wings earned a win for LSU in the final game of the Baton Rouge regional Sunday afternoon against Southern Mississippi. He was insrted on the mound in the sixth to hold the Tigers lead in a 3-2 game. Bertuccini pitched 1.1 innings, faced 4 batters and fanned each of them. The Golden Eagles rallied for 2 runs after Bertuccini exited, but because the Tigers scored 6 in the sixth, an inning in which he pitched, the winning run was scored for him so he earned the victory. Bertuccini's record is 1-0 on the season in relief with a miniscule 1.71 ERA. #10 LSU will now host their Super-Regional matchup with UC Irvine for a spot in the College World Series.

Kyle Bellamy of the same '07 GRW team also assisted his #2 Miami Hurricanes into the Super-Regionals this weekend. Pitching in all three Regional Games, his line on the weekend: 4.1 IP with 6 Strikeouts. Bellamy is known for his stingyness, however Missouri was able to touch him for 2 earned runs in the second game. Those 2 earned runs in the eighth would allow Mizzou to pull within one, but the 'Canes prevailed. Bellamy bounced back in the championship game vs. Mississippi mowing down the three Rebels he faced. #2 Miami will now take on Arizona in the Super-Regionals this weekend in Coral Gables. The winner of the three game set heads to Omaha for the College World Series!

Some experts are predicting a Miami vs. LSU finish, as Miami is consdiered by many as the strongest team, and LSU is currently one of the hottest teams in Division I baseball. Could the '07 Geneva Red Wings teammates face each other on the big stage? Stay tuned.....

2008 GRW Greenlatt holds World Champion Sox scoreless...Post date March 3rd, 2008

Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern University) has been on the Geneva roster for the past two seasons. In 2006 his season was shortened when he tore a tendon in his pitching hand while warming in the Geneva 'pen. In 2007 he never made it to Geneva as he tore a ligament in his knee, which required surgery. This year he's all healed and he's on the GRW roster again. On Friday his Husky's met the World Champion Red Sox in Notheastern's annual exhibition game against Boston in Ft. Myers, FL. Greenblatt was called on with two on and two outs in the fourth inning. After walking his first batter which loaded the bases, he was able to get the last out and get the Husky's out of the inning. Despite the fact that the Husky's lost 15-0, Aaron was the bright spot for the Husky's pitching staff, as he was the only pitcher to not give up an earned run. Aaron also received a brief "bright spot" moment on the Red Sox webpage, which can be found here.
