The Wings will play a "doubleheader" against Niagara Falls on Wednesday, completing the June 28th suspended game at 6:00 and the second game immediately following. Wings head out to play two, get one in, a loss.... Posted July 12th, 2008

The Wings headed down the Thruway to Niagara Falls to play two, to make up a rainout from earlier in the season. The problem was the rains came again, and only one game was played. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) got the start on the mound for the first game and pitched the complete game, going 6 and striking out six. Charly pitched solidly scattering 5 hits, but taking the hard luck loss as the five runs that scored turned out to all be unearned, due to three Wing errors. The Wings were first to get on the board with two runs in the first. Crusader teammates John Sills (Holy Cross), who would lead the batting with a 2-4 day, and Matt Perry (Holy Cross) would both reach on hits. Doug Elliot (UConn) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice ground out to 2nd, then Kevin McGrath (Westchester) would add a single to drive in the second run. That would be all the Wings would get in that inning, despite having runners on second and thrird with one out. Usually scoring early in a doubleheader is a good omen, however that would be the only scoring the Wings would do, and the Wings would have a hard time holding onto the ball. In the bottom of the first the Power would tie the game on a Wing's error with two out, and would add three more unearned runs later to take the game 5-2. The second game would never get started as storms came through the area and washed out that one out. That game will be replayed at a later date.

The Wings return home today to host the division leading Hornell Dodgers. Game time is earlier than normal, starting at 5:00. The Wings will then be off on Monday, and travel to Brockport on Tuesday before returning home for a long homestand from Wednesday through Saturday of next week.

Wings split "doubleheader" with Yanks... Posted July 11th, 2008

As part of a non-traditional doubleheader last night the Wings hosted the Yankees at McDonough Park last night to resume their suspended game from June 18th. The Wings would pick up in the fourth where they left off, down 4-0. The Kyle Eastham (South Florida) returned to the mound wher he was when the rains came that June night. he found himself in trouble twice in the innings he pitched but managed to wiggle out of the jam finishing the night with 4 innings pitched with six strikeouts. The Yankees would add to their lead in the eighth making the score 5-0 before the Wings would rally in the bottom of the eighth with 4 runs of their own, all coming with 2 out. The big hit of the inning came with two men on, John Sills (Holy Cross) would drive a line shot in the right center field gap falling for a double and scoring two, cutting the lead to 5-4. Sills would also finish the night with two stolen bases. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) would add to the hit total with his 2-4 performance. The Wings would allow another run in the top of the ninth, and would go quietly in their half of the frame. Final score of Game 1 6-4.

The second game of this "doubleheader" would be all Wings from the start. Mike Assmann (Cortland) would get the start on the hill and would give the Wings 6 innings of quality pitching. Although he did walk 6, he finished with no runs and 7 strike outs. Kris Mengle (George Mason) would finish off the shutout with 3 innings of relief allowing only one hit in his three innings. The Wings would get on the board first in the scond when with 2 on and 2 out Nick Spears (Texas Pan Am) would send a fly ball to right clearing the wall for a three run home run. That was all the Wings would need on the night as the pitchers shut down the Yankees, but the hitters were not finished adding 10 more hits ad 5 runs for a 8-0 shutout. Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) continued his hot hitting going 2-4 with three runs scored. Will Harford (Notre Dame) who also has been hot of late 2-4 on the night with two runs scored and three RBI's. One person who has been red hot but unfortunately went hitless was John Sills (Holy Cross). John's 0-5 last night snapped a 21 game hitting streak which started the first game of the season. 21 game in a row with a hit is a new Geneva Red Wing record, congratulations John!

The Wings have one more game at home tonight, Friday July 12th at 7:30 against the Bolivar AIA's bfore hitting thr road Saturday. Come on out tonight and catch some red hot Wings!

Wings battle for nine beat 'Bats.... Posted July 9th, 2008

The Wings fresh off the All-Star break are ready to make a run for the playoffs. In their way tonight were the second place Riverbats. The 'Bats sent All-Star starting pitcher AJ Sapporito to the mound to face the Wings, however Dan Rouah (Lynn), the Wings starting pitcher, looked like the All-Star on the night. Rouah went 7 strong innings scattering 5 hits and striking out 5. Aaron Brett (SE Missouri St) would hold the game in the eighth allowing no hits, then Jason Koziol (George Mason) would close the game and earn the save striking out two of Brockport batters in the ninth. Although the game seemed tight throughout, the Wings would out hit the 'Bats 15-5 including a 4-4 night for rightfielder Ryan Uphouse (George Mason), and a 3-4 night for DH Doug Elliot (UConn). Every Wing starter would get at least one hit off the 'Bats battery and the Wings would walk away with a 3-2 win to pick up some ground in the playoff race.

Wings add to West Win, Mendiola Earns Defensive MVP... Posted July 8th, 2008

The NYCBL Western All-Stars took the summer classic last night 9-5 behind terrific performances by all three Red Wings. Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) was one of two players on the West roster who played the entire nine innings. Mendiola went 2-5 on the night scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He also made some nice plays in the field, one deep in the hole behind third throwing out an East runner on a bullet to first in the third inning. For his effort on defense, Mendiola earned the Tom Kenny award as the Defnsive MVP of the NYCBL All-Star Game. Doug Elliot (University of Connecticut) got the start behind the plate and managed five different pitchers on the night. He was solid behind the plate and called an excellent game. Elliot was 1-3 on the night with a run scored. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) pitched the ninth for the West. In a 9-5 game in the ninth Eastham would allow a lead off double and he would hit the next batter. He would then find his groove and strike out the next three batters. Eastham was the only pitcher on either team to strike out the side in the game. Earlier in the day Matt Perry (Holy Cross) competed in the Home Run Derby. Matt did not fare as well in his outing, as he was unable to clear the fence in his 10 out attempts. Perry, more of a line drive type hitter still leads the Wings with a .414 batting average and 16 RBI's. Congratulations guys, thanks for doing such a great job representing the Wings!

The Wings are off today, Tuesday July 8th and will return to action tomorrow at home against the Brockport Riverbats. First Pitch is at 7:30. Tomorrow is also a Little League Night, all liitle leaguers in their team shirt get in free. Thursday will be our frst Dollar Night, every Thursday home game for the rest of the season will feature $1.00 Beer and $1.00 Hot Dogs!

Wings pick up where they left off with Pio's.... Posted July 3rd, 2008

After scoring 2 runs in the ninth on Tuesday night against the Pioneers to win the game, the Wings picked right up where they left off scoring 3 runs in the first last night. The Wings would pound out 12 hits on the night, all singles, and hold the Pioneers to isolated runs throughout the game. Aaron Greenblatt (Northestern) would get the start and the win on the night going 6 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs and stiking out 5. The Wings would hold a comfortable 5-1 lead going into the 7th, but the Pio's would make it closer scoring two in the frame. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) would come in with loaded bases and only one out in the 7th and strike out the first batter, then get the second to ground out right back to him. Eastham would hold the game for 1 2/3 before the Wings would break it open in the eighth with 4 more runs. Matt Perry (Holy Cross) would do the most damage int he inning with a loaded bases hit to left which would be misplayed by the left fielder resulting in 3 runs scored. Perry would go 4-5 on the night, Crusader teammate John Sills (Holy Cross) would piggy-back two big nights and go 2-4 with 2 RBI's on the night. When all was said and done the Wings would come off the field with a 9-4 win and would pick up some ground on the playoff race at the expense of the Pioneers.

Wings score two in ninth for the win...Posted July 2nd, 2008

After several nights of frustration, the Wings went into Tuesday's game with the Pioneers hoping to change their luck. Mike Assmann (Cortland) started on the hill and pitched solidly keeping the Wings in it through 5 1/3 innings. Kris Mengle (Georege Mason) and Pete Lopmado (Minnesota St.) each pitched 2/3 of an inning of scoreless baseball. Jason Koziol (George Mason) earned the win with 1 1/3 innnigs of no-hit relief. The hitters were quieted by the Pioneers pitching staff only scratching out 5 hits on the night but one of those hits would be a big hit at the right time. Behind 5-4 in the top of the ninth, Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would draw a lead off walk, Ryan Uphouse (Geroge Mason) would then lay down a text book bunt moving Mendiola to second. Mendiola would then advance to third on a balk, a play which would result in the Pioneer manager's ejection. Then the fun began. John Sills (Holy Cross) would drive a screamer to right center scoring Mendiola and when the dust cleared he would be standing on third with an RBI triple, tying the game. Sills would then score what would be the winning run two pitches later on a wild pitch to the backstop. That would set the stage for Aaron Brett (SW Missouri St) as he closed the door on the Pioneers striking out one and sitting the hitters down in order for the save.

The Wings face the Pioneers again Wednesday night, this time at home at McDonough Park. First pitch is set for 7:30. The Route 14 rivaly is alive and kicking, make sure you are there to experience it!

Dodgers drop Wings on a see-saw night....Posted June 30th, 2008

The Wings traveled to Hornell last evening to take on the division leading Dodgers. The Wings would take an earky lead going up 2-0 after 2 inings of play, but the Dodgers would answer back with 3 in the third. The Wings and Dodgers would play a game of see-saw all night as the Wings would take the lead again scoring 4 runs in the fifth only to relinquich the lead in the end losing 8-6. Five errors and thirteen men left on base would not help the boys in black much either.

Charly Bashara (Northeatern) would make his first start of the season, and would allow 3 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Steve Forster (St John's) woud come in for 3 2/3 innings of relief, allow 2 earned runs but strike out 7 and take the hard luck loss. The batters hit the ball all over the place again last evening pounding out 12 hits and drawing 8 walks, but had a hard time getting those runners accross the plate. Kevin McGrath (Westchester) went 3-4 on the night with 2 doubles. Matt Perry (Holy Cross), Bill Cupello (Holy Cross), Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo), and Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would each add two hits a piece.

The Wings are off today and will travel to Elmira for a home/home series against the Pioneers on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tuesday away game starts at 7:00 and the Wednesday home game at McDonough Park starts at 7:30.

Is there an electrician in the house?.... Posted June 29th, 2008

For the second time in as many nights the lights again failed at McDonough Park. On this night, the Wings wouldn't be able to finishwhat was a great game. The game was cruising along nicely as Kyle Eastham (South Florida) was in a rhythm keeping the Power off the board for four innings allowing 2 hits through 4. Midway through the bottom half of the fourth the lights went out, play continued through that half of the inning since there was still enough daylight. In the top of the fifth the game was halted due to waning daylight. The umpires allowed the Wings staff one hour before the game would be suspended. With 10 minutes to spare the lights would come back on once a fuse was secured from the City of Geneva. The Wings would add a couple hits but no runs in the next few innings. Kris Mengle (George Mason) would relieve Eastham and pitch 2 1/3 innings, and strike out five before the lights would go out again, and suspend the game. The game will be completed at a later date to be determined.

The Wings travel to Hornell to take on the Western Division leading Dodgers. First pitch is at 7:00, the game can be heard live on TeamLine.

Early runs get better of Wings..... Posted June 28th, 2008

Early runs again put the Wings in a deficit on Friday night but one thing can be certain there is no quit in the Wings. Starting pitcher Dan Rouah (Lynn) struggled early giving up 6 runs on 8 hits. The relief duo of Tim Crabbe (Westmont) and Pete Lompado (Minnesota) combined for the last 4 1/3 innings each allowing just one hit a piece while striking out four a piece. The relievers kept the wings in the game, however the bats never really came alive as the Nitro pitchers held the Wings to six hits on the night. That didn't mean that the Wings folded. After goigng down 6-0 the wings would draw closer in the sixth after Ryan Uphouse (Geroge Mason) would single, steal second, then eventually be driven in on a sacrifice fly by Doug Elliot (UConn). The Wings would add a second in the ninth as Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would hit a one out screamer downt he right field line for a double, steal third, then would be driven in on a base hit by Jimmy Vahalik (Toledo). The boys however, could draw no closer and would drop another 6-2.

The Wings will again be home tonight hosting the Power of Niagara Falls. Game time is 7:30, come on out early and meet the team!

Wings continue with hot bats, scoring different story... Posted June 27th, 2008

The Wings kept their hot hitting alive as they continue to hit the ball hard tallying 16 hits last night against the Bolivar AIA's. Although the wings pile on the hits, the hits don't seem to be very timely as the wings left 12 runners on base last evening in a 5-4 loss. It was an all Northeastern battery last evening as Aaron Greenblatt (Northeatern) took the loss pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs with six strikeouts. Charly Bashara (Northeastern) came in and provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit and striking out five in the process. The Wings would score in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 on a Kevin McGrath (Westchester) SAC fly. The Wings could have put the game away early as they had loaded bases with no outs in the first but were only able to score one. The AIA's would respond in the bottom half of the inning making it 1-1, then add four more by the 5th. Bolivar took a 5-1 lead into the eighth when the Wings made it a bit closer scoring two runs on Bill Cupello (Holy Cross) and Matt Perry (Holy Cross) RBI singles. Going into the ninth down by two Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) would start witha lead off triple, Kyle Eastham (South Florida) would pick Mendiola up with a ground out to second. The Wings just couldn't muster the last run to tie the game and would fall 5-4. Eight of the Wings starters had at least one hit last night and six Wings had multi hit games, including a 3-4 night for Catcher Jimmy Valhalik (Toledo).

The Wings will host the Allegany County Nitros tonight at 7:30PM at McDonough Park. Come on out, it is supposed to be a wonderful night for baseball!

Wings bounce back, but fall short .... Posted June 26th, 2008

Putting the prior evening's debacle behind them, the Wings traveled to Hornell to take on the division leading Dodgers. The boys in blue would get on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second, however the Wings would immediately rebound and take the lead in the top of the third with two runs off Doug Elliot (UConn) and Eddy Mendiola (Notre Dame) RBI singles. The lead would be short lived as Hornell would plate one, the game winner, in the bottom of the third which would hold for the rest of the game. Mike Assmann (Cortland) would again pitch brilliantly and take the hard luck loss going 7 full innings, allowing five hits and striking out five. The Wings bats were just a little too flat on the bight and they couldn't pick up Assmann's nice start for him, leaving 11 men on base. The 2,3,4 hitters of Matt Perry (Holy Cross), Elliot, and Mendiola were a combined 7-11 and accounted for seven of the eight hits on the night. Elliot went perfect at the plate with a 3-3 night with one RBI.

The Wings travel tonight to Bolivar. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00PM and can be heard live on TeamLine. The Wings will return home tomorrow, Friday June 27th to host Allegany County.

Wings add Wednesdays as Little League Nights.... Posted June 24rd, 2008

Little Leaguers in their uniform shirt receive free admission to every Tuesday and Wednesdayhome game. Also, Wednesday's will now be our "Have a Catch With a Wing" night where children can come out to the field before Wednesday games and have a catch with their favorite Wing. Flurry of ninth inning errors sink Wings....Posted June 24rd, 2008

Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes are considered a part of life on Earth, and just an "act of God" to insurance companies due to the fact they can't be stopped or altered to spare destruction. Last night's ninth inning should be added to that list of "acts of God" for the destruction it caused on a small patch of ground called McDonough Park.

The Wings cruised through eight innings behind stellar pitching by Steve Forster (St. John's) as he fanned 7 over 6 innings allowing no runs and scattered 5 hits. Charly Bashara (Northeatern) and Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) took care of the seventh and eighth as Brett struck out the side in the eighth. Then the earth moved, the funnel cloud appeared, and the flood gates opened, all that was missing were the locusts. The Wings went into the last frame up 4-1 after scoring 2 in the bottom of the eighth, and no one could fore see the destruction ahead. To make a long story short; the Power would send 16 batters to the plate in the top of the ninth, eleven would score, six errors would be made, three outs would take 42 minutes, and the terrific game that could have been was completely erased by a 12-4 Power victory.

One game a season does not make and the Wings know they need to put that three out stretch behind them, therefore the boys will get back on the bus today and face the Hornell Dodgers in Hornell. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. I think the boys will be ready to take out some frustrations on the boys in blue. Listen to the game live on TeamLine!

Wings blank 'Bats run up four straight....Posted June 23rd, 2008

Fifteen! Thats the number of doubles the Wings have hit over he past two games. Yesterday afternoon the Wings pounded out 14 more hits, 7 of which were doubles en route to a 9-0 thrashing of the Riverbats. Ryan Uphouse (George Mason), with two doubles yesterday afternoon, has hit 5 doubles in the past two games, and has hit at least one double in four consecutive games. Doug Elliot (UConn) and Kevin McGrath (Westchester) also added a two-bagger each in their 2-4 outings, as they both continue their hot hitting. Chris Altieri (FIU) also added two hits on a 2-4 day, with a stolen base. The Wings collectively swiped 4 bases on the day and really took the game to the Bats. Kyle Eastham (South Florida) pitched a solid 5 innings striking out 5 and scattering 4 hits. He was picked up by a group of four relivers, Tim Crabbe (Westmont), Charly Bashara (Northeastern), Jason Koziol (George Mason) and Aaron Brett (Central Missouri) each pitched shutout baseball combining for 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. The bullpen did it's job to preserve the shutout and the win, as the Wings blanked the bats 9-0.

The Wings have a well deserved off day today, but plan to keep hitting tomorrow, Tuesday, as they host Niagara Falls at 7:30 in McDonough Park. Tuesday's are always Little League days at the ball park. Every Tuesday this season Liitle leaguers wearing their jersey get in free. Also, all kids are welcome to come out to the right field grass between 7:00-7:15 to play catch. Grab your favorite Wing and a glove and come out early for Little League night!

Three and counting as Wings bury Nitros...Posted June 21nd, 2008

The Wings kept the streak alive last night, and we are not talking about the three game winning streak, we are talking about the hitting streak. The Wings again posted double digits in the hit column for the third night in a row as the Wings beat up on the Nitro's in Scio 10-3. Dan Rouah (Lynn) pitched his best game of the season earning the win and going seven strong innnings scattering 4 hits while striking out a team and season high 11 batters. The hits also seem to be coming in bunches as Ryan Uphouse (George Mason) lead the battery with a 3-6 night, all of which were doubles and posted 3 RBI's. The three doubles set the pace for the night as the Wings would pound out eight doubles on the night! Bill Cupello (Holy Cross) and Doug Elliot (UConn) would add 3 hits a piece, and Will Harford would add 2, including 3 runs scored.

The Wings will take their hot play to Brockport today to face the Riverbats in a matinee at 1:00. The Wings will have a well deserved off day tomorrow and will return home on Tuesday night to host the Niagara Falls Power.

Wings jump all over AIA's, win two in a row... Posted June 21st, 2008

After a few days of rain and bad weather which seemed to put the team in a daze, the Wings again exploded offensively for the second straight day. Kevin McGrath (Westchester), as they say in baseball circles, had a day. McGrath went 3-4 on the night with a two run home run in the fifth breaking the game wide open. McGrath is swinging a hot bat lately batting going 5-8 with 4 RBI's over the last two games batting out of the eighth slot. Matt "Chandler" Perry (Holy Cross) also added three hits and two RBI's on the night. The Wings found themselves in a good position going into the ninth up 11-2 on an outstanding pitching performance by Aaron Greenblatt (Northeastern), in which he scattered 6 hits over 7 innings. Tim Crabbe (Westmont) came in for one perect inning of relief before the AIA's would take advantage of some Wings pitching and fielding mistakes and make it a game scoring 5 runs in the ninth. Bolivar would load the bases and put the tying run at the plate. Jason Koziol (George Mason) was able to get the last batter to ground out to third ending the threat and preserving the 11-7 win.

The Wings travel to Allegany County today for a 7:00 tip off. The Wings will then travel to Brockport tomorrow for a 5:00 first pitch before returning home for Little League night where all Little Leaguers with their uniform shirt get in free on Tuesday against Niagara Falls, first pitch 7:30. A trip to the ballpark, what a great way to celebrate the last day of school!
