Wings win 9th straight, sets up Pennant Championship game Saturday night... Post date July 27th, 2007

...The Wings won their ninth straight tonight beating the Allegany County Nitros 6-2 at Big Mac, on a rainy and foggy night. The Wings got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Julio Gomez (Coker College) hit his fourth home run of the season, a two run shot to the opposite field, to put the Wings up 2-0. The Wings then added four more runs in the third with nearly everyone in the lineup making some type of contribution in a five hit barrage, in which the boys also took adavantage of three errors. By the end of the third the boys had built a 6-0 lead and looked as though they would be on thier way to take over second place. The Nitros would try to come back scoring one run in the fourth and sixth, but they would stand 11 runners on base as the Wings defense and pitching tightened up on the Nitros at the right times. Jason Bowman (Westchester) added a win to his record moving him to 3-1 on the season. Lance Rhodes (SE Missouri St) held the game for two innings, Tom Schiller (MCC) took over in the eighth, and Ed Paul (Francis Marion) finshed off the game in the ninth. The win tonight puts the Nitros a half game behind the Wings who take over second place, and sets up the Elmira game tomorrow night as the Western Division Pennant championship game. The Wings sit just .5 game behind the Pioneers in second place so, that sets up the final secnario: the winner of tomorrow night's game in Elmira at 7:00 will win the Western Division Pennant! You can bet it will be a terrific game. Listen live on Teamline if you can't make the road trip!

Wings win, move within a half game of first; pots and pans night tonight!... Post date July 27th, 2007

...The Wings put themselves within striking distance of first place with a 4-1 victory over Niagara Falls last evening. Three pitchers combined to 2 hit the Power last night at Big Mac. Ashton Mowdy (E Oklakoma) earned the win with a solid performance pitching 6 innings and striking out 9, and the run that was allowed during his appearance was unearned. Jordan Purrington (Stony Brook) held the game for three innnings allowing one hit, striking out 4 and also allowed no earned runs. Kyle Bellamy (Miami) came in in the ninth and dominated as ususal, striking out two en route to his 15th save of the season. None of the three pitchers this evening allowed a single ball to leave the infield! Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) broke a 1-1 tie with a 2 RBI double in the fifth inning. It was all the Wings would need to put away the Power. Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) would then pick up Damewood on an RBI double to right field. That would round out the scoring on the night as the Wings would hold the lead and win 4-1. Damewood finished the game 3-5 with 2 RBI and Parkinson would also go 3-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

...The most exciting part of this evening's win is that the win, coupled with Elmira's loss to Brockport, puts the Wings within .5 game of first place. Allegany also made a move on first place as they beat Webster in a rain shortened 6 inning game that they won 4-2. Their win puts the Nitros in a tie for first with Elmira, the Wings sit .5 game behind both teams. The Wings have the ability to control their own destiny to a certain extent this weekend as they face both first place teams on the the last two nights of the season. The Wings host Allegany tonight at 7:30 at Big Mac, and travel to Elmira on Saturday for a 7:00 start at Dunn Field. The Wings do have a trump card, however, as they have one more game to play if needed. If the makeup of July 19th game vs. Webster has the ability to influence the standings (for good or bad) the Wings will play that game at home on Sunday July 29th. This decision will be made by the Comissioner, absed on the standings, following Saturday's final games. Once we know the decision it will be posted immediately on our webpage, and the NYCBL webpage.

...HUGE night tonight...First place Allegany visits Big Mac with the Wings ready to pounce just a half game behind them. Two games left in the season, first place on the line...what could be a better situation than that? Get out to the park tonight, we want a HUGE, LOUD crowd! We are looking for 1,000 loud, proud Wings fans. Bring your horns, noisemakers, pots, pans, whatever makes noise, and get in for $1! Win two tickets to the Baseball Hall of Fame for the most creative noise maker! Get excited! This what the boys have played all season for! First pitch is at 7:30, be there!

Wings win, clinch playoff berth....Post date July 26th, 2007

...The Wings clinched a playoff berth last night at Big Mac beating the Hornell Dodgers 7-4. The team took the clinch in stride, with no celebration, as their sights are set higher, attempting to take the pennant. The results from last nights game puts Allegany just .5 game in front of the Wings for second place, and Elmira just 1.5 games in front of the Wings in first place. With one game left against both teams there is a possibility the Wings could make a move on first. However, if they can at least take over second they will be guaranteed home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs. Now to last night's game...

...The Wings (23-15) found themselves down 1-0 after in the bottom of the second, this would end the Wings scoreless inning streak at 30 1/3 innings, but that would be the last lead the Dodgers (21-19) would have on the night. The Wings answered back immediately in the bottom of the second tying the score when Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) singled and Ryan Hypke (Francis Marion) walked. Nick Spisek (Westchester) then doubled to pick up Summers making the score 1-1. The Wings then added 3 runs in the third as The Dodgers loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) then picked up 2 RBI's on a solid single through the gap into left field. Then Hypke plated the last batter of the inning scoring Brendan Stokes (Northeastern), who drew a walk earlier in the inning, on a SAC fly to right. The Wings lead would be 4-1 at the end of three. The Wings added single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th. In the 6th Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) capped the Wings scoring with a solo home run to right centerfield, his third of the season, to make the score 7-3. The Dodgers would add one more in the 7th, but 7-4 would be as close as they would get. Ed Paul (3-2) (Francis Marion) pitched 5 innings of solid ball and earned the win on the night, Lance Rhodes (SE MIssouri St.), Jason Bowman (Westchester), and Paul Bertuccini (LSU) each pitched one inning holding the game for closer Kyle Bellamy (Miami) who closed the game and earned his 14th save on the season.

...The Wings host the Niagara Falls Power this evening, first pitch is at 7:30. The Wings will also play host to Allegany County tomorrow night at 7:30. Please check back for more information regarding playoff scheduling. Once the playoff picture is finalized we will announce the home payoff schedule. Come on out and help the boys win the pennant!

Playoff Update....Post date July 25th, 2007

...The Wings were again idle last evening, however, two games were played that impacted the playoff race in the NYCBL West division. The first game of interest, Brockport played host to Bolivar. A Brockport loss would have sealed the deal for the Wings, but the Riverbats squeeked out a 1-0 victory. So, the Wings stay in the same position: any combination of one Wings win or one Brockport loss clinches a playoff berth. The Wings will not be able to pick up any ground tonight on first place since Elmira and Allegany play each other and they are both tied for first. Although the Wings will miss any opportunity to gain on first, this situation does have an interesting twist. Regardless of who wins that game, if the Wings can win tonight, they pick up a full game on the losers and will be only .5 game out of second. The Brockport win last night also made for interesting baseball in the fourth place race. Hornell lost to Webster 9-3 which now puts Brockport within 1.5 games of Hornell, which holds the last playoff spot, with four games to play. Brockport's elimination number remains at 5 for the final playoff spot: any combination of Brockport losses or Hornell wins which equal 5 eliminates the Riverbats. Boy, is this getting good or what!!?!!

...The Wings can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win over visiting Hornell, game time is at 7:30. The Wings hold the season series lead against the Dodgers at winning 4 of the 5 contests played this season. The Wings will also be home Thursday as they host Niagara Falls, and Friday against Allegany County. Each game starts at 7:30. Come on out and help the boys in their push to the Championship.

No game tonight but Wings can still clinch playoff berth... Post date July 24th, 2007

...The Wings were off yesterday and will be off today, but that doesn't mean the playoff picture will remain the same. Allegany and Niagara Falls faced off last night and with the Allegany 6-1 win, the Nitros pulled into tie for first with Elmira. Both teams have clinched a playoff spot. The Wings remain within striking distance of first place as they are 1.5 games back of both Elmira and Allegany, while Hornell sits 1.5 games behind the Wings currently in the last playoff spot. There are two other teams attempting to make their way into the playoffs. Brockport and Niagara Falls are still alive, but are on life support. The Wings are in good shape to make the post season, they will clinch the berth with either one more win, or one more Brockport loss. However, Brockport stays alive for the fourth playoff spot, and will battle with Hornell. Brockport's elmination number with Hornell is 5, which means they are elminated on any combination of Hornell wins or Brockport losses that add up to 5. Niagara Falls has an even slimmer chance to make the post season since the only team they can catch at this point is Hornell, their elimination number is 1, they are eliminated with any comination of one Hornell win or one Niagara Falls loss. With five days left in the regular season alot can happen! Stay tuned!

There are two games on the docket tonight that have an influence on the playoff picture: Bolivar @ Brockport and Hornell @ Webster. If Brockport loses this evening, the Wings clinch a playoff berth.

28 2/3 innings without a run allowed!..... Post date July 23rd, 2007

...The Wings (22-15) extended their no-runs-allowed inning streak yesterday afternoon as they blanked the Bolivar A's 3-0 for the third shutout in as many games. The last run to score on the Wings was on Wednesday in Brockport with one out in the eighth. The team is hitting their stride at the right time of the season! The streak has now hit 28 2/3 innings as Dusty Odenbach (University of Connecticut) pitched 8 spectacular innings of one hit baseball, taking a no hitter to the eighth before it was broken up. Odenbach also struck out 10, and only faced 26 batters in his eight innings. The Wings made it interesting though, scoring only once in the first eight innings. The first run came in the fourth as Adrew Damewood (UT @ Tyler) and Juio Gomez (Coker) hit back to back singles, and Cory Leplante (Minnesota St) then bunted them over. A ground ball to the SS by Chris Parlinson relulted in an error scoring Damewood. The score would remain 1-0 going into the bottom of the eighth. The Wings manufactured two runs in the eighth, Ryan Hypke (Francis Marion) walked to start the inning, and moved to second on a bunt by Nick Spisek (Westchester). Chris Vargo (Richmond) then singled making it 1st and 3rd with one out. Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb)hit a soft liner to right which, with the uncertainty of the path of the ball caught Vargo in no-man's-land and he was thrown out at second. Hypke was able to score on the play making it 2-0. With two out Damewood singled to center, putting Miller on third. Chad Dalieden (University of Texas @ Tyler) pinch ran for Damewood and was called on to delay steal with Miller on third. The steal resulted ina n error by the shortstop and allowed Miller to score, making the contest 3-0. The Wings went into the ninth with the 3-0 lead and Kyle Bellamy (Miami) cam in to close the game. Bellamy proceeded to strikeout two en route to his 13th save on the season.

...The boys are off on Monday and Tuesday this week but the schedule is very kind as the team chases the pennant. Three of their last four games are at home: Wednesday vs. Hornell, Thursday vs. Niagara Falls, and Friday vs. Allegany County. All three games start at 7:30. The Wings then travel to Elmira for their last regular season game of the year against the Pioneers. The rainout make up for the July 19th game vs. Webster would be on Sunday, but will only be played if the game has the ability to affect the standings, if it does not, the game will not be played. Check back daily for playoff and scheduling updates. As the playoff picture becomes more clear we will post the playoff schedule.

Daily Playoff Update: The Wings picked up a full game on both Elmira and Allegany last evening. The Wings win coupled with Allegany's 3-2 loss to Brockport, and Elmira's 7-3 loss to Hornell puts the wings just 1 game behind the Nitros for second place, and only 1.5 games behind division leading Elmira. With four games to go in the season this may be a photo finish for the pennant!

Wings blank Allegany for second shutout in a row (updated)... Post date July 22nd, 2007

... The Wings blanked league leading Allegeny County last night, and knocked them out of first place with the loss. Three Wings pitchers combined for a three hit shutout of the Nitros. Paul Berticcini (LSU) pitched five strong innings. Allowing 2 hits while striking out 6. Ashton Mowdy (E Oklahoma) finished up for Bertuccini striking out 3 in three innings and not allowing a hit. In the final frame Kyle Bellamy (Miami) allowed his first walk of the season, but struck out two to earn his 12th save and break the Red Wing single season save record. The Wings pitchers have now held the opposition scoreless for the past 19 2/3 innings! To help the pitching out, the Wings scored early. In the top of the first Chris Vargo (Richmond) reached as the first batter, being hit by a pitch. Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) followed with a single. Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) then singled to left but Vargo was cut down at the plate, but in a smart baserunning move Miller adavanced to third. Miller would then then score easily on Julio Gomez's (Coker) single to the right side. Damewood advanced to third and was picked up by Brendan Stokes' (Northeastern) RBI double. As the pitchers rolled the Wings kept hitting and were patient. They added a single run in the fifth after Miller reached on a single, Damewood avanced him to second on a walk and then Miller stole third. Gomez then picked up an RBI on a SAC fly to right field, amking the score 3-0. The score remianed 3-0 until the top of the ninth when the wings would pick up an insurance run. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) started the inning with a single and Vargo and Miller would follow one out later with back to back singles loading the bases. Spears would score after Damewood was hit by a pitch, adding the final run en route to the 4-0 shutout.

...The Wings take on Bolivar this afternoon at home, first pitch is at 5:00. The Wings sit in third with a game and half lead on Hornell and are currently only 2 1/2 games behind of first place Elmira.

...Please be aware that the original schedule had the Allegany County game on Friday July 27th as an away game, the game has been resheduled and the Friday July 27th game will be the last regular season HOME game of the season.

Wings blank 'Bats for fourth straight win (updated)... Post date July 21st, 2007

...The Wings hoping to move up in th playoff standings took on the Brockport Riverbats last night at Big Mac. As has been the case with nearly every start Jason Bowman (Westchester) has had this season, he put together yet another sterling performance on the mound. Bowman pitched 7 full innings as he scattered 5 hits and struck out 6. Bowman has reduced his already miniscual ERA to 1.03 with the seven shutout innings last evening. The Wings got on the board in the second after Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) singled and stole second, Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) traded places with him on an RBI double. The boys then loaded the bases after Nick Spisek (Westchester) and Brett Burch (Oral Roberts) singled. Summers then scored on a Cory LePlante (Minnesota St) SAC fly, to make the score 2-0. The Wings added two more in the fifth after they again loaded the bases with three singles from Andrew Damewood (Texas @ Tyler), Parkinson, and Brendan Stokes (Northeastern). Summers then scored Damewood on a SAC fly, and then Burch singled to right to score Parkinson. The insurance run scored in the eighth after Spisek doubled with two out, then Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) followed with a single scoring Spisek The big bat of the night went to Damewood as he went 4-5. The 'Bats were never able to break through the Wings pitching, as Ed Paul (Francis Marion) and Tom Schiller (MCC) pitched one inning each of perfect relief. The Wings never let the 'Bats in the game, and the result, a 5-0 win.

...The Wings travel to Wellsville tonight to take on division leading Allegany County at 7:00. The Nitros have been struggling since the all-star break going 3-8 while the Wings have been red hot winning 8 of their last 10. One thing can be sure with just 3 games seperating the teams it should be a battle. The Wings return home on Sunday to host the Bolivar A's, first pitch is at 5:00. Only 4 regular season games remaining at home, so come on out and cheer the boys on to a Championship!

Thursday's game cancelled due to rain...Post date July 20th, 2007

... The Wings did everything they could to attempt to get the game in last night on State Senator Nozollio night, however the rain just would not stop. The game itself was cancelled despite the fact that the largest crowd of the year made it through the gates. Close to 800 peole braved the rain with the hope that the rain would stop. There is no make up date is planned at this time. The Wings will host the Brockport Riverbats tonight at 7:30. The combination of the Wings being idle last night and a Hornell 7-0 loss to the Riverbats, the wings pick up a half game on the Dodgers and have sole possession of third place now by 1/2 a game. That helps the Wings playoff hopes as the top four teams in each division will make the postseason.

Wings plate 7 in second and put 'Bats away... Post date July 18th, 2007

...After a pitchers duel Tuesday, the boys were hoping to make things a bit easier on themselves Wednsday afternoon. The Wings did just that. In the second inning with the score 0-0 the Wings loaded the bases with no outs after two walks and a hit batsman. That brought Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) to the plate. Summers promptly deposited a Riverbat pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam to start the scoring. Cory LePlante (Minnesota St) would also drive in one run in the inning on a single en route to going 3-4 on the day with 2 RBI. The Wings would add two other runs in the inning, to put themselves comfortably ahead 7-0. The Riverbats would attempt to make it close scoring 1 run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. However, the Wings wold extend their lead in the eighth with two more runs, as LePlante picked up his second RBI single, and Brock Miller (Gardner Webb) scorched a RBI triple to right center, making the score 9-3. After plating one more run in the bottom of the eighth, the 'Bats ran out of steam and succumed to the wings second inning onslaught. Lance Rhodes (Francis Marion) pitched five innings in the start and earned the win scattering 5 hits and allowing 2 earned runs. Scott Forster (Monroe CC) came in to relive Rhodes and shut down the bats for four full innings, allowing just one earned run. The Wings are now 7-2 since the NYCBL All-Star break and are one of the hottest teams in the league. Following a few losses by key teams in the playoff race, the Wings are now tied with Hornell in third place 4 games out of first, and only 2 games behind second place Elmira.

... The red hot Wings return home this evening to host the Webster Yankees at Big Mac on State Senator Nozollio night. The first pitch is at 7:30, and the game is also $1 beer and hot dogs, as well as free admission to all little leaguers. Come on out and help the Wings in their push to the Championship!

Pitching duel goes the way of the Wings... Post date July 18th, 2007

...Going into yesterday afternoon's game the Wings held a one game lead for the final playoff spot, and hoped to gain some ground as they traveled to visit the Webster Yankees. The game ended up being a nail biter as more innings passed. The Wings would get on the board first in the top of the first after Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) hit a two out single, and Julio Gomez (Coker College) followed with a double to right center to pick up the RBI. The Yankees would tie the score in the bottom half of the inning. The score would remain that way until the eighth as Ashton Mowdy (Eastern Oklahoma) scattered 5 hits over 7 innings, and sat down 6 strikeout victims, as he worked out of trouble in two seperate occasions. Finally in the top of the eighth the Wings broke through. Chris Vargo (University of Richmond) put himself on second with a double on a hard ground ball down the 1st base line that the 1st baseman couldn't handle. Damewood then followed with a solid single to score the speedy Vargo from second. That was all the Wings would need as Ed Paul (Francis Marion) came in in the eighth. Paul walked the first batter and then gave up a hit, but he also proceeded to pitch his way out of the inning with a little help from Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island), who knocked down a hard grounder at second to throw out the runner at first for the last out of the eighth. Kyle Bellamy (Miami) would turn out the lights in the ninth, as ususal, striking out 2 and in the process, tying the Red Wing record for saves with his 11th of the season. The Wings pick up some ground with the 2-1 win, with a two game cushion on their final playoff spot. The Wings remain 1 game out of third and 2 out of second, while the Nitros hold a 5 game lead on the Wings in first place.

...The Wings travel to Brockport this afternoon to take on the Riverbats at 5:00. The boys return home tomorrow night to host the Webster Yankees on State Senator Mike Nozollio night at Big Mac. Come on out and see us, only 6 regular season home games left!

Wings split DH in Hornell... Post date July 16th, 2007

... Hornell and Geneva went into last night's doubleheader seperated by only one game. Hornell was holding on to third in the West, while the Wings held a one game lead in fourth. After all was said and done the Wings were able to hold ground on their playoff spot as they split the twin bill with the Dodgers. Niagara's win over Webster later in the evening kept the playoff picture exactly the same at the end of the day. The Wings still hold a one game edge on Niagara for the final playoff spot, and sit one game behind Hornell for third place. Now the games...

Game 1: The Wings got on the board first after Chris Vargo (Richmond) reached on an error. Then after moving to third on a walk and fielder's choice, scored on another error. The Dodgers answered right back with two in the bottom of the first off starter Paul Bertuccini (LSU) who lasted 3 innings on the afternoon. The game would see-saw all afternoon, as the Wings tied the game again in the second. Nick Spears (UT Pan Am) lead off the inning with a double, then moved to third on a fielding error. He scored on a fielder's chioce double play. Spears ended up with half of the Wings hits in the first game going 2-3 on the afternoon with a single in the fourth. The Wings dropped the first game 5-2 and looked to the second game to wake up the bats and earn an even split.

Game 2: The Wings would fare a bit better in the second game, as the bats came alive in the second inning. The Wings plated 3 runs in the top of the inning. Julio Gomez (Coker) started the inning with a single, and the bases would quickly load on a walk and an error. However what looked like a promising inning was quickly in jeapordy as Gomez was gunned out at the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brett Burch (Oral Roberts). With two outs and the bases loaded the odds were no longer in the Wings favor. However, Nick Spisek (Westchester) worked a walk which drove in a run, and Cory LePlante (Minnesota St) followed up with a two run single. The Wings would end the second with a 3-0 lead. The Dodgers would score once in the third, and again in the sixth to make the game interesting going into the final inning with a Geneva lead of 3-2. Cory LePlante (Rhode Island) would start the seventh with a lead off triple, and then score after Brock Miller (Gardner Webb) walked and was caught in a run down on a pick off move. On the ensuing error LePlante scored and Miller wound up on third. Miller would then score on an Andrew Damewood (UT Tyler) ground out to second. The inning would end with the Wings up 5-2, and Kyle Bellamy (Miami) coming in to close the game for Dusty Odenbach (Connecticut) who earned the win pitching 6 strong innnings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 9. Bellamy would allow one hit and ring up one strikeout while stranding that runner at third on the final out. He earns his 10th save on the season, and continues to keep his ERA at a perfect 0.00.

...The Wings have an off day today, but return to play on Tuesday against the Webster Yankees at 5:00 at St John Fisher, and Wednesday at Brockport, also at 5:00. The Wings return home on Thursday for State Senator Mike Nozollio night at the park as they take on the Webster Yankees. Game time is at 7:30, the game is also a Thursday $1 night and a Little League night.

Stokes, Miller, Damewood pace Wings for a win... Post date July 15th, 2007

...The Wings took on rival Niagara Falls last night in a Western Division showdown. Only a half game seperated the teams going into last evening. The Wings holding the slim margin on the Power for the last playoff spot. The Power started the scoring early plating one runner in the top of the first, but the Wings answered right back in the bottom of the first as Andrew Damwood (University of Texas @ Tyler) belted a shot over the right field wall for a two run homerun. The game see-sawed back and forth as the Power took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, but the good guys came right back in the bottom of the fourth and scored the tying run as Brendan Stokes (Northeastern) walked, and was sacrificed over on a bunt by Brock Miller (Gardner Webb). Nick Spears (Francis Marion) picked up an RBI single to drive in Stokes making the score 3-3. In the bottom of the fifth the Wings added two more runs as Damewood lead off with a double and advanced to third and scored on two wild pitches. Stokes again drew a walk in this inning, and adavnced to third on a wild pitch and a Miller basehit. Cory LePlante (Minnesota St.) picked up Stokes from third on a nice SAC fly to center with one out. The Wings now had the Power by a score of 5-3. The Stokes and Miller duet had a few more runs in them in the seventh. Stokes started the rally with a two out single, and Miller followed suit. They both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, then were driven in on a LePlante single. The Wings would go up 7-3. The Power would add two runs in the eighth making the conest 7-5, but that would be as close as they could get as that would be the final score. Ed Paul (Francis Marion) earned the win pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up no earned runs. Kyle Bellamy (Miami) came in in the ninth to shut the door on the Power, earning his ninth save on the year.

Yankees come up short as Wings win... Post date July 14th, 2007

...The Wings clinging to the fourth and final playoff spot in the West division, faced off against the Yankees at Big Mac last night with eyes on holding that playoff spot. The Wings jumped up early on the Yankees as Brendan Stokes (Northeastern) picked up and RBI on his double in the first. Then in the scond two men reached without a hit on a hit by pitch and an error on a bunt. Chris Vargo (University of Richmond) picked up a 2 RBI triple to clear the bases. The next batter, Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) then drove in Vargo to make the score 4-0. The score would remain 4-0 as Jason Bowman took his no-hitter into the seventh. The no-no was promptly broken up by the first batter of the inning. He would finish the inning , but things got a little out of hand. The Wings were able to stop the bleeding before it was too late as the Yankees came out of the seventh with only three runs making the score 4-3. The Wings would send Tom Schiller (Moroe CC) to the mound in the eighth, and he would close down three hitters he faced. Then the big sidewinder, Kyle Bellamy (Miami) entered in the ninth and finshed the job for his eighth save on the year. The final score of 4-3 put the Wings within 1 game of third place and 2.5 game out of second. They hold tight to the final playoff spot in the West.

...The Wings are home tonight against the Niagara Falls Power, first pitch is at 7:30. The Power are just a half-game behind the Wings, and are also vying for a playoff spot. Come on out and help the Wings turn off the Power tonight!

Wings drop one in Bolivar... Post date July 13th, 2007

...After beating divison leading Allegany on Tuesday the Wings were hoping to make some moves in the playoff picture. Well, that occurred, but not in a good way. The Wings dropped one in Bolivar 4-1 last night. The Wings would struggle at the plate scratching out only 6 hits after the 16 hit barrage on Tuesday. The lone run scored in the fourth after Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) doubled with one out, then advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. The other bright spot was Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) 2-4 performance at the plate. Jordan Purrington (Stony Brook) pitched well enough to win scttering 5 hits and 3 runs over 5 innings, however the bats would not cooperate.

Wings break out the sticks against the Nitros...Post date July 11th, 2007

...The Wings came out of the All-Star break swinging last night as they pounded out 16 hits and scored 13 runs, beating up on division leading Allegany County 13-1. The majority of the damage came in the Wings half of the second when nine runners crossed the plate. The inning started with a display of "small ball" as Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) walked to start off the inning, and then in a process which included three consecutive bunts, the Wings had the bases loaded with one in and no one out. Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) squared threatening to bunt for a fourth batter in a row, as the third baseman charged, Parkinson pulled back and sent a shot past him, almost hitting the fielder who was now just 30 feet from the plate. The hit plated another run, and was the turning point for the game. Andrew Damewood kept the inning alive on his fielder's choice RBI hit to second as the beat out a double play relay at first. The inning started with "small ball" but ended with a couple of huge hits. With two out Julio Gomez (Coker) belted a two run double and he was followed up two batters later as Chris Vargo (Richmond) nailed a line drive three run homerun to right field. The Nitros got one back in the top of the third, on an unearned run, making it 9-1, but that is as close as they would get th rest of the game as the Wings extended their lead, winning 13-1. Vargo finshed 4-5 on the night with 3 RBIs. Gomez and Parkinson both ended up 3-5 with 3 RBI's between them. Ashton Mowdy (Eastern Oklahoma) earned his fourth win of the season on no losses, going 6 full innings, scattering 6 hits allowing no earned runs, and striking out 4. Mowdy has been masterful in his past three starts including a near perfect game two weeks ago against Webster.

... The Wings travel to Brockport today to take on the Riverbats in a 5:00 matinee. The Wings follow up the road trip with a visit to Bolivar on Thursday before returning home for a two game stand on Friday against Webster, and Niagara Falls on Saturday.

Power beat Wings in 10th.... Post date July 5th, 2007

...The Red Wings fell to the Niagara Power by a score of 2-1 in ten innings of baseball Tuesday night. The Wings had a promising start, getting their lead off hitter, second baseman Brock Miller (Gardner Webb), on base and around to score on a double by shortstop Nick Spisak (Westchester). Unfortunately, that would be all the runs the Wings would putacross the board for the next nine innings. Ashton Mowdy was the starting pitcher for the Red Wings, and pitched another brilliant game. Mowdy recorded eight innings onthe mound, allowing only one hit and giving up one unearned run in the seventh inning. The run was scored by first baseman Chris Martinez. Martinez reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch, and then scored on another Red Wings error. The winning run for the Power scored in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Clayton Snodgrass scored on a single by right fielder/pitcher Ryan Jacobi.

Leading the charge offensively for the Red Wings were Spisak, 2-4 with a Hit By Pitch and two singles, and center fielder Chris Vargo (University of Richmond), 2-5 with a bunt for a hit and single. Ashton Mowdy got a no-decision, while the win went to Ryan

Ninth inning rally comes up short, Wings lose 5-3... Post date July 3rd, 2007

...The Wings for the third time in three days again faced off against the Pioneers of Elmira. Having dropped the first two games they were hoping to get back on track. Ed Paul (Francis Marion) was on the mound and pitched good enough for the win allowing just 6 hits and 3 earned runs over 7 full innings, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Some timely errors allowed Elmira to take advantage of the situation and an early 2-0 lead was expanded to 4-0 by the 5th. The Wings would get one back in the fifth off a triple by Chad Dalieden (University of Texas @ Tyler) who then scored on a Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) SAC fly. The Pioneers answered right back scoring one in the top of the sixth. The score would remain 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. In the Wings ninth the rally started, Shawn Summers (Francis Marion) started it off with a hustling play, diving around an errant throw at first, setting the tone for the inning. Nick Spears (University of Texas Pan Am) then followed with a double to right center field scoring Summers. Brock Miller (Gardner Webb) came in to run for Spears and proceeded to advance to third on a fly ball , and score on a wild pitch. The Wings got it to 5-3, but could not finish the job with the tying run at the plate after Parkinson walked.

...The Wings head to Niagara Falls to face the Power tonight at 7:00. The wings are in a tie with the Power for the final playoff spot in the West Division. Pioneers rally in ninth, defeat Wings... Post date July 2nd, 2007

Despite getting off to an early lead in the second inning off a two-out RBI double by left fielder Cory Laplante (Minnesota State-Mankato) to score DH Julio Gomez (Coker College), Elmira rallied back to win 5-4 against the Red Wings. After the run in the second, the Wings put up two more in the third. Gomez doubled off the left field wall, and shortstop Nick Spisak (Westchester) reached on an error. First baseman Brenden Stokes (Northeastern) followed that up with a two run single into center field, putting
the Wings in the lead 3-0.

That lead held until the bottom of the fifth when Elmira scored 3 runs on three hits, with shortstop Andre Licinsky, left fielder Mike Perkins, and first baseman Wade Gaynor scoring the runs. The Wings held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Elmira rallied off a single by third baseman Ryan Giblin, a double by center fielder M.L. Morgan, and then a two run walk off double by Licinsky. Paul Bertuccini (LSU) got a no-decision in his first start. Wings take one from struggling A's... Post Date June 29th, 2007

...Despite Bolivar's 1-17 record coming into last evenings game, the Wings were not underestimating them, they have been a dangerous team. Out of their 17 losses they have 12 of those losses by 2 runs or less, so the Wings were aware they would need to play solid baseball in order to win. The Wings were able to break out in a scoreless game in the sixth inning. Chad Dalieden (University of Texas @ Tyler) broke out of a hitting slump going 2-3 on the night and picked up two RBI's in the sixth. The Wings would add one run each in the seventh and eighth. However, the A's would not go quietly, as they scored one in the eighth off starting pitcher Jason Bowman (Westchester) who went 8 2/3 innings stiking out 5 walking 2 and allowing one earned run. Bowman would allow a couple of hits in the ninth and his earned run before Ashton Mowdy (E Oklahoma) came in to close the door with the tying run at the plate, it was Mowdy's first save of the season. League save leader Kyle Bellamy (Miami) was unavailable in the pen due to a minor injuries obtained in a fender bender earlier in the day. He will remain sidelined for a few days.

Wings tie it in the ninth, lose in 10... Post Date June 29th, 2007

...The Wings faced off last evening against division leading Alegany County. The Nitros jumped up 4-0 early scoring two unearned runs on three Wing errors. But as usual the Wings shored up the defense and started to chip away at the lead in the fifth scoring one run on a suicide squeeze, but ten left the bases loaded. In the sixth the Wings made the score 4-2 on a passed ball , but gain leaving two in scoring position. The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the ninth. In the ninth Brock Miller drew a one out walk, and then proceeded to take two bases on a passed ball putting him on third base. Andrew Damewood then singled putting me on first and third with one out. Following a pitching change, a wild pitch scored Miller, and advanced Ryan Hypke who pinch ran for Damewood to second. The hit of the night came off Brendan Stokes bat, a hit which seems to win the game. The line drive was hit very hard but not quite high enough as it bounced off the 380 sign in left center, scoring Hypke. The Wings left the ninth feeling pretty good with the score tied, however, Lance Rhodes would surrender a lead off home run to return the lead to the Nitros. The Nitros would then add one more run to finish the scoring at 6-4.

...The Wings are home tonight as they host the Bolvar A's, and remain home on Saturday as they host the Elmira Pioneers. Game times are both at 7:30. Come on out to the park an enjoy a game!

Wings lose a wild one in the 'Falls.... Post Date June 28th, 2007

... Quite a wild one last night, the combined line score: 24 runs on 25 hits and 8 errors. The Wings jumped out to an early lead 1-0 in the first, but that was the only lead they would hold through this wild game. The Power jumped out to a 9-2 lead after five, but as usual the Wings were not going to go quitely. The Wings proceeded to score 9 runs in the final 3 innings. In the seventh Andrew Damewood (University of Texas @ Tyler) tripled to center for two RBI's in the four run inning. In the eighth the Power's pitcher could not find the strike zone as he wakled in two runs and hit two batsmen. In the ninth it looked like it might just be fate for the Wings to comeback yet again. Down 13-7 going into the final frame, the Wings put together three hits to score a run on an error, then with two outs and two on Chris Vargo (University of Richmond) deposited the first pitch from the Power relief pitcher over the right field wall, for a three run home run. Damewood then doubled to center, setting up the drama putting the tying run at the plate in the form of NYCBL homerun leader, Julio Gomez (Coker College). Unfortunately for the Wings it was not in the cards, as Gomez popped up in the infield to end the game, but they battled right to the end!

Mowdy takes no hitter into the eighth .... Post Date June 27th, 2007

...Ashton Mowdy (E Oklahoma) came out to the park yesterday to pitch! In 90 degree weather his slider was breaking hard and his fastball was explosive, according to Webster hitters, and it showed! He took a no-hitter through seven full innings. Mowdy faced only 23 batters through 7 full innings, and came into the eighth ready to go. Unfortunately, the first batter in the eighth promptly banged one into a hole in the outfield ending his no hit bid. The Wings lead at that point was a comfortable 5-0, and Lance Rhodes (SE Missouri St) was immediately summoned from the bullpen and finished off the eighth for Mowdy. The Wings scoring started early. In the first, Brock Miller (Gardner-Webb) stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch. In the third, back to back doubles by Julio Gomez (Coker College) and Brendan Stokes (Notheastern) added the second run. The Wings added 3 runs in the seventh inning, as Stokes (Northeastern) picked up his second RBI of the game , and Nick Spears (Texas Pam Am) hammered a two out-two RBI single to round out the scoring. Stokes and Spears both went 2-4 with 2 RBI's each on the night. Kyle Bellamy (Miami) came in and shut the door on the Yankees in the ninth, earning his sixth save on the season.
